the title is a misleading but what I meant was what wattage do I need
the specs. are:
motherboard:GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R
cpu:core i7-930
hard drive: WD caviar black 750gb, WD green 2tb
optical: BR writer and BR player
card reader
case: HAF 922
ram: 6gb
video card: either gtx 470 or two gtx 260's and gt 240

would like it to be under $100 and modular

that is kind of a big disparity, between running a single card and running 3....

If just the GTX 470...a good quality 550W PSU, would allow you to overclock it and the CPU to a moderate level...BTW, the Apevia in your signature IS NOT a good quality PSU

If you want to run the 3 cards...I would go 700W or higher...again with a quality PSU....like the Antec Truepower New 750W, or the Seasonic S12D 750W...XFX Black Edition 750W

The psu on my sig. was bought from a local computer store and he said it was a good psu so I trusted him and that was what was at his store. The reason between one and three is that the build is for another person and they wanted to be able to watch 3-d blueray when it came out and the only cards that can do that are the gt 240 and the gtx 470 and 480 but they want a better card than the gt 240.

would a gtx 280 and gt 240 be better than two 260's

NEVER get your quality assessment from the person selling to you. What do you honestly expect him to tell you, that it's a crap psu?

Well, good for him and his profits maybe.
That's the main reason people sell those LC-Powers or similar crap 'cause they made good money out of it.

A good 550W PSU like the new Seasonic S12II Bronze should be OK, or an Antec TruePower New.
