I'm getting ready to setup an AMD system I currently water cool my Intel CPU?s but this is the first AMD so I'm not as comfortable with judging peilter size. I have a 13.8 V 20 amp power supply to run the peliter. I should have no problem getting rid of the heat generated. So I down to picking the best pelier. I was looking at the 156watt form Dangerden.com

What do you recommend?

to run a pelt on a athlon you need a 172 watt or higher....225 would be best......reason being the heat generated by athlon's.........anything lower is just a push.....you dont get the temps you want.....i would do some more checking .....see what other people are running

With decent cooling, a 156 watt pelt will probably provide full load temps at a little below ambient. Not a bad trade off unless you want to go whole hog with a pair of 120s or a 220.

Max power dissipation for a 1800+ is ~66watts (not overclocked). Multiply that X2 and you get a 132watt peltier if you don't plan to overclock (good rule of thumb). Get a bigger one if you plan to overclock.

Why go pelt if no OC?

And...where I live (.14c/KWhr) it would cost over $2 a day just to run the 156W pelt 10 hours/day. Yuck. In less than 2 months you'd have enough to buy a better CPU... AND at the cost of running that pelt, you could BUY a new CPU every 3 months.

I'm planning on overclocking as High as the chip will go. My max voltage will be 2.1V. I'm not sure of electricity cost for a peliter but since in the winter I have to plug in my car(for those who live in the sun, when its gets cold (-55f low) if you don't keep your oil, battery, coolant warm you don't move) any how a couple of extra dollars a month don't hurt.

I had good results with an Athlon putting out about 100 watts and a 156 watt pelt. Having tried a 156 watt pelt, both single and dual 172s, and dual 120s, my best results were with the dual 120s. If you have the cooling capacity, the 226 watt pelt seems to be the darling in the pelt crowd these days. This would probably be my first choice but again, a 156 watt pelt would work and require less cooling.

personally i prefer 2x 110 watts or one 220 watts. i think it is the best for cooling. enough cooling power but not too much to remain supportable by a good PSU (Antec True550 or Enermax EG651P-VE)
