what sides would you serve with steak?

planning early for Valentine's Day.

neither my SO nor I are particularly into the "holiday" and we agreed that neither of us wanted to deal with the clusterfuck that will be trying to go out to a restaurant that weekend, so I thought I'd surprise him at home that night with a nice steak dinner.

currently thinking that I'll go to a local meat market and buy a couple ribeyes or something, a nice bottle of red wine, and bake a flourless chocolate cake for dessert, but I'm at a loss trying to think of what sides to make with it.

Broccoli makes you fart, so ymmv.

I always liked salad or shimp with my steak.

Otherwise, asparagus or anything else that's green, really. Green beans, etc.

And, of course, some kind of potato.

I like bread with my steak rather than a baked potato. Perhaps do to the fact that most potatoes just fill me up quickly and I'd rather eat more delicious steak than potato. Plus with bread, you can mop up the delicious juice. Instead of baked potato, try baking a loaf of bread. Time the bread so it will come out of the oven at the same time as the steak. Who doesn't like fresh baked bread?

For another side, any type of steamed or sauteed veggie will do.

I like grilled asparagus with some salt, pepper, garlic and a light coating of olive oil.

Then there's some baked sweet potatoes. Actually baked, not microwaved.

No potatos. Steak is a heavy meat and you already have a dessert planned. Potatos will sit like a boat anchor.

Merinaded mushrooms might be good.

I'm white trash, so I like fries with my steak, and spinach or broccoli, or just a nice salad. Or more steak.

fry and crumble up a couple strips of bacon in a pan. Add in a couple tablespoons of red wine vinegar. A tablespoon of dijon mustard. Tablespoon of sugar. Stir. Now toss in a giant pile of de-stemmed spinach and stir it around. Let it lightly wilt and top with a sliced hard boiled egg or crumbled feta. Yum!

Also can't go wrong with garlic bread for some starchy side for the steak.

Sauteed mushrooms are awesome on top of a steak, for a side I like brussel sprouts or asparagus. Not a fan of baked potatoes personally.
