what should i wear to the ballet?

tights?

Seriously, it sometimes depends on whether it is a matinee or a nighttime show. Dressier for night, somewhat more casual for daytime.

It also depends on the venue, though.
 
you can't go wrong with a conservative suit. you can always take the jacket or the tie off to look more casual.

however, you can never get more formal looking if you go with a really casual outfit in the first place.

its an evening performance at a very large and nice theatre

well, maybe now i can wear my double breasted suit, since i almost never get to
 
depends how old you are....im still 22 so id wear a nice pair of jeans, button up shirt, and a blazer. I dont really like wearing suits.

Since you clearly will be leaving your balls at home, I suggest you overcompensate by wearing jeans, a flannel shirt, and a trucker hat. If possible have a cigarette tucked on top of your ear, and have a pack rolled up in your sleeve. Cowboy boots are suggested, but not required.

I like this idear best, by far. I was thinking along the same lines. That, or don't go. 2 easy choices!
