What should I upgrade first ?

Current setup :

Intel 2.66/533
865PERL
Mushkin 512mb pc2700/333 HP 2-2-2
PNY 5600U 400/400

Should I go ...........

Intel 3.2/800 & Mushkin 512x2 pc3200 black lvl1 2-3-2

OR

Ati X800Pro OR Nvidia 6800GT

Ram & cpu will cost approx. - $540.
Video Card - $400.

Edit : I forgot to add that I do play FarCry & would like to see better frames . Right now most setting are on Normal with the last 3 options on Low .

Video Card

that way you can buy a new CPU in the future which won't bottleneck the new video cards as much as they do now.

If you plan to buy a cpu:
amd 3200 64 or higher , atleast : provided you can upgrade in about 1.5yr

RAM:if u wanna buy no less than 1gb dual ddr 400/433.

vram:128mb/256mb radeon 9800xt/pro : buy 2 instead one good:better for future/economical

Yes grab an x800 or 6800...wtf are you talking about akshayt? Buy 2 instead of one? And to get an a64 he would need a new mobo aswell.....wait for 939, grab a vid card now and enjoy =)

High is right, you need to pick up a new video card before your cpu upgrade. 2.6Ghz is enough power to push any game, you're simply GPU limited with that 5600 video card. And even if you upgraded to an Athlon 64 you'd barely see any increase in framerate with your current card.

Wait for the socket 939 Athlon 64's like the rest of us 🙂

I am have a 1.8@2.4ghz P4 and a 8500@300/300. I am thinking of getting an x800pro, so that is what I would do. Atleast after you get a x800 or 6800 you know what your next upgrade will be (the cpu). No confusion over where the bottleneck is.

Get a new cpu and memory.

My reasoning is that when the new BTX motherboards come out an agp 8x graphics card wont even fit into them. Get yourself a 2.6/800 and oc it to 1k fsb - youll be set on processor speed for a while.

Wait till you have money to upgrade again and make the move to pci express - then you can get a new videocard thatll be compatable with the latest tech for a while to come.

I am guessing that ATi and Nvidia will release even faster cards soon after BTX is standard (right around the corner) especially since the 6800 and x800 are so close in speed to each other theyll keep competing for top spot.

Plus if you purchase a video card now in two months youre going to wonder why the value of your card has dropped 150 bucks.

Your CPU is still decent as well as your RAM.

I would try OCing them though, you'll get a bit of extra performance, but you should definitely upgrade your video card first cause that card is the sh|ts.

I have a 2700+ which means that it performs about the same as yours. I have it overclocked though, but that's not the point. It's still a decent CPU for the time being and your video card wasn't even decent when it was released.

Your video card is crapping your systems performance right out the window. Nvidia REALLY screwed up with the 5600 series. It is extremely slow... even slower than the Geforce 4's. I would go for a 6800Gt when they come out. They offer the best price performance ratio.

Im with Gamingphreek. A 6800GT would seriously boost your performance i games. The bottle neck on your current system is most definatly the graphics cards, especially if you want to play Far Cry, a new card will shift that bottleneck to CPU/RAM. Once you have a shiney new card you should be looking into a A64 939 and a gig or more of good quality RAM.

Hope that helps
