What should I look for when buying an upright vacuum?

I want to buy an upright vacuum to clean my carpets. My family has always owned those wet/dry vacuums that look like a red R2D2, and have never had the upright kind, so I have no idea what to look for when buying one. It's going to be for light home use, so I probably don't need anything super powerful. I guess something with a hepa filter might be nice... Any suggestions or experiences?

Here's a few things that I look for:

Length of cord - The longer the better. I hate having to plug the vacuum into a new outlet for every room.
Direct Drive - I hate replacing belts.
Bagless - Bags suck.
HEPA filter - Read the fine print. Some advertise HEPA filters, but have a crappy micron rating. The smaller the better.
Warranty - Obvious.
