What should I get? For the 1millionth time.......im sure

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys, thought I would come here and ask some opinions on some cars. I currently drive a 99 Jeep Cherokee, I-6 4.0L, I love it to death, but I am getting hammered due to current gas prices. I am 22 yrs old, and my brother called me and said he would take over payments on my jeep if I decided to get something new(he drives a 1968 Plymouth Fury 3, used to be mine back in the day, now its dad/son/brother project car). Anywho, I am lost at this point. I have my eyes on the following cars:

Volkswagon Jetta
Volkswagon Golf
Volkswagon GTI
Honda Accord
Honda Civic
Something Nissan in the general pricing area as the cars listed above

Now, I am open to other suggestions as well, however, these are what I have my eyes on now. Now, heres the trick. I have about $1500-2000 down-payment, and would like to keep payments below or equal to $250 a month. I live in the Dallas Ft Worth area so if anyone knows of any hot deals going on, please let me know.

Also, would you guys BUY a car or LEASE one? I have never leased so I know nothing about it, thanks in advance!

1. Some of those cars aren't in your price range (new). $250/ month only allows you 15K over 60 months w/ 0% intrest. I assume there will be intrest. Factor in tax, tag and title and that decreases your purchasing power more.

2. Banks don't like doing TOP without a down payment and the person assuming the loan having excellent credit. Banks don't like two cars being in your name unless you have substantial income and credit.

3. Don't lease.

4. Keep your fvcking Jeep. When it is paid off you will have gas money.

~2 years left? So you want to extend your obligation to 5 years on a new car? Use the 2K to pay down the Jeep or as gas money.

Also there is the possibly complicating variable of your bro taking over payments.

You haven't saved any money in the end unless you continue to drive the new car for a while after it is paid off.

Assuming a 16K car you are spending 10K more over the next 5 years and cutting your fuel cost ~50%. I guess it all depends on how much you drive, if you plan to keep the car a while, and if the gas cost is really hurting you that bad.

How much is your monthly gas cost now?

I'm partially playing devil's advocate here. If you want a new car get one. I just don't think in the end you will save that much money but of course the immediate savings may come in handy. Except that depends on your fuel cost too. You are going to drop 2K that you have. How long will that pay for gas? 2 years when you factor in you will still have to pay for gas on the new car?

What??!??! Is that MSRP?

Forget the hybrid. Get a better deal by spending $23.5K on a non-hybrid V6 Accord EX (that has a sunroof) and think about how many years of gas $8.5K will buy you.

Stop complaining about gas prices:

I have to pay $5.67 a gallon = £0.81 a litre (I think my calculations are right)

That is if a shop around - most places are around $5.80
