What should I do with a really old computer?

Its too old to sell or upgrade, but I was thinking maybe theres something cool or fun I could do with it.

At its time, it was toptoptop of the line. Its SCSI!

Anyway this is what its got:

-Enlight 250 watt PSU
-Blue Thunder steel case. (Ugly, but I really like how its set up)
-Pentium II 133 Mhz
-Three hard drives (two seagates and a quantum, total of about 8 gigs...I think)
-32 megs of ram
-cd rom drive
-floppy drive
-just one case fan
-some old ass 17" monitor

I'm really thinking about using the monitor for when I buy my computer in August, maybe even the case. Anyway what could I do with this junk? Besides throwing it out 😉

Oh yeah, should I try overclocking it? I've never done it before, and this might be a good time to learn.

i'm not kiddin, my dad has sold several just like that at garage sales. he lives in a neighborhood that does group sales on a given weekend (usually 2x a year) and each one he has an old PII or similar setup that he has up and running, usually connected to a long cat5 so that its on yahoo or something at the time.

they consistently sell for $100+. he's sold at least 5 this way.

Ya, id agree with linux box. It is fun to load up some small distro (zipslack) on an old box and just play around 🙂

Install Win95 / 98 if not already there, and use it for classic Windows and DOS games that don't run properly under XP. Put in a voodoo1 or 2 for Glide goodness.

+Kick-ass audio card=mp3 box
+dxr3 decoder = dvd box
I disagree with throwin it away...se he probably spend couple of g's when he bought it, now he can only sell it for 100 bux? nonsense. Theres tons of uses for it. But if i had no need of a computer, i would give to some kid here, or to a kindergarten. teach kiddos to share 😉

i think the throwing away bit might have been sarcasm.

I'd toss linux on it. As a matter of fact, I have a similiar box that runs the mail server for my domain.
Make a heck of a firewall too.

don't sell it or throw it away. Find a use for it in some form or another. U never lose money on something until you go to sell it of throw it away🙂

File Server, Firewall, Router... whatever. But at some point even that is no longer an option.
Just like my old PowerMac that I took apart today *sniff*
It's being replaced by a much faster P2-450 but I needed the storage drives and so I took CD-ROM, HDD and NIC out of the Mac and hung it's mainboard on the wall above my main rig. So sad, it served me well and I learnt alot about Macs and their quirks from it.

do divx encoding with it so you don't have to worry about it hogging your main pc rig of its cycles. of course, don't watch it using that machine though

Pentium || 133MHz? Must be a rare collectors item for sure. All the P2's I've heard of started at 233MHz. 🙂
