What Should I do? (OT)

So the decision has been made, at least in my fathers eye, but I have not given up.

First for some background info:

Earlier this year, as I prepared for my junior year in high school, I realized that I only need 1.75 more credits to graduate at the end of this year. So, (at 16) I began preparing a letter for my guidance counselor, presenting the idea to him. School began, and I gave the letter to my counselor, he was sold on the idea. I then presented the idea to my father, who was quite skeptical.

Now, Today, my father and my counselor met, they agreed that I should wait, because of my age and maturity, (Many people will say I have more than enough maturity to make it on my own.) that I should wait, and return to high school for another semester. If I were to do this, I am sure that it would be another full year before I got into college, because after graduating, I would be made to go to a local junior college for a semester.

Hence my argument comes up... I want to go to school in Maryland, my father is worried about me getting everything out of college at this age, as well as how he is going to pay for it. My idea is that I move to Maryland for a year, (With my current girlfriend, or possibly with a couple other people I know in the area [BK? :)] and work for a year, establishing residency, gaining the "Real World" experience my father wants to have, and still getting away from home as soon as possible.

My question, is... does anybody have any experience with leaving home at a young age (Hope this question isn't too personal ) and if so, what are your views on a 17 year olds ability to make a living for them selves?

Thanks in advance,
strates

p.s: this can kind of be related, the sooner I get into UMD, the sooner I get to help BK assimilate it. :)

I made it just fine.

Apply for tuition assistance, grants, etc... after all - that's what the liberals put 'em there for. Do what you feel is right - but do it 100%

He'll get over it. (They always do)

Especially when you've got your PhD at age 24... He'll be saying "yep" - "That's my boy"...

So many people get caught up in things at that age that it is really hard to say. Basically you have to decide if you are mature enough and determined enough. Only you know your limitations.

But keep in the back of your mind, the easiest person to fool is yourself. Remember that and you will do fine.

STRATES, why not finish school but get your own place in the town you live in, sort of a trial run. Then if all works out go for it. I was in your spot 26 years ago and now have kids your age. if you go for it right away have bucks in the bank to fall back on,- girlfriend leaves (it happens) lose job, ect. ect. Dont rush. Lifes to short.

good luck in whatever you do

Maybe you can go to college while in high school and get it for free.
That's what my kid did.

Why try to quash ambition? - that's nuts.
You're young enough to take the risk. Dare to be something. :)

Lots of good replies here! Not sure I can add any. Make sure you are commited to your decision. Make sure you take a real good look at your own limitations. Did the counsolor and/or your dad point out any they are concerend about? I'd stay away from the girlfriend idea, addidng baggage on your first attempt may get you in hot water! Once your comfortable then see how you feel.

I know there are programs out there that will allow you to get into a comunity collage or something of that nature threw High School. See what your father says about that. And another thing, don't be away from school too long. The hardest part is going back. I spend 5 years doing what I thought was good enophe for me. But I wanted to do something else. So I went back to school. And it was hard to get back into that "school" setting. Homework, teachers, that sort of thing.

What ever you decide is the best thing to do. Just make sure you think it all threw first.

Good luck and I hope things work out the way you plan them to be. :)

Community College???? Bwah -

Take AP courses, take the CLEP tests - apply to MIT....
GO FOR THE GUSTO -
Lest I be misquoted....

GO FOR THE GUSTO!!!!!

You are only this age once... just once. DO IT. But - Here's the old grey haired caveat...
If you are going to do it, develop a steely resolve to be the absolute best there is. No one, and nothing swerving you off course. Pick a destination and take one step at a time beginning NOW - toward it.

You will not regret it... I guarantee. :)

Dan, when I ment Comunity classes, Most high schools have a program threw the comunity collages for high school students. At least it would be a start. Then after he graduates from High School. He can go into some other major Collage. A lot of those classes that he can take in a comunity collage can be transferd. So maybe get a head start on generals?

I wasn't flaming you...

CLEP will get him through the generals... At this age - he's intelligent enough to move to the big schools, should he so choose. The question is - "do I have the personal resolve to do whatever it takes?"

Only Strates can answer that question... and the answer is between him, and him - :)

Thanks for the support every body. I think I have the resolve to be the best I can be. I plan on majoring in Criminology, or Forensic Pathology, probably with an IT minor, (In hopes of going to the FBI Academy at Quantico) the IT minor may help with future developments in the Ciminology field.

The girlfriend isn't really a "girlfriend" just a close friend that happens to be a female, and is also planning on going to school in College Park. Sorry for not clarifying that earlier.

AP Tests... I have taken one so far, and plan on taking another one this year. First one was Computer Science, and I had a poor excuse for a teacher, so I was unable to get credit for that class.

As for CLEP... all I can say is UHH? never heard of them. This brings up another reason I which to graduate early. That being the fact that I go to an Agriculture oriented high school, that really doesn't have much to offer me after this year.

Well, anyways, I appreciate the contribution you guys have made, and I will take into consideration my faith into myself before I even think about taking the next step.

thanks,
strates

I moved out of state on my own when I was 15. I say if you think you can do it, go for it :)
