Jan 2005, ill do some shoping to build my first PC, so far ive only had
an pre-built Dell.

So i thinking of this setup:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Mobo: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe nForce4

CPU: AMD Athlon64 3500+ 2200MHz/2.2GHz 512kb Socket939 + Zalman cpu-cooler

GFX: Hightech Excalibur ATI Radeon X850XT Platinum Edition ICE-Q 256Mb DDR3

RAM: Corsair CMX512-3200XLPRO 2x512Mb (tot. 1Gb) Dual DDR PC3200 XL 2-2-2-5 400Mhz

CASE: Antec Super LANBOY Aluminium ATX without PSU

PSU: Antec True Power 430W ATX

HD: Western Digital Caviar XL+ WD2500JD 250Gb 7200rpm 8Mb SATA
----------------------------------------------------------------

So what have i done wrong? Mobo OK? Overclockable? Mem OK or bad choise?

This setup will cost me ~1700? in Sweden where i live and thats what i can afford, so if you
think i should replace something please keep it within the same price range.

I want a nForce4 mobo, and the vendor i might buy from dont have any

Might go for an 6600GT x 2 instead of the ATI 850XT if it wont be to expensive.

Remember to specify the 90nm CPU
And perhaps a DVD-Burner (Nec 35x0A)

If you are getting an SLI board you might as well go with a 6800GT and then you can always slap another one in there. But the Nforce 4 Ultra's will be out soon too if you don't want SLI

the 2 6600gts wont be as expensive as the X800. You can get an eVGA 6600gt on ZZF for 160. So two would be $320. Thats what I got

Sure i can wait to buy an second 6800GT when they are cheaper (in 6-9 months) but then the FX-55's will probably be alot cheaper to. So the question is what is best?

A. 2x6800GT SLI with AMD 3500+

or

B. 850XT PE with AMD FX-55

Well ill check in january if the Nforce 4 Ultra's are avaible and descide then.

(After reading benchmarks about 850XT PE outperforming an 2x6600GT-SLI the 6600GT SLI wont be interesting.)

The FX-55 will not drop in price because as soon as AMD releases another FX chip the FX-55 will not be made anymore so your out of luck there. And to answer your question go with the 2 6800GT's because there is no visible difference between an FX-55 and a 3500+. And the 90nm chips are Winchesters

Dont get the 6800. Yes it is an amazing card, running better than the x850 or any radeon, it has so many dam problems. It runs Fart Cry at like 120 fps but just frezzes after like 10 mins. I say stick with the x850.

EDIT- I mean Far Cry:laugh:

AMD Athlon64 3500+ 2200MHz/2.2GHz 512kb Socket939 + Zalman cpu-cooler
replace this si a 3200 and oc, and dont get that heatsink i bet you are thinking of the round flowerish one. get the xp-90 or xp-120
and no a 6600gt's on sli isnt even as good as a 6800gt so think about the x850xt i would recommend getting the 6800gt and getting another one later. and you could reach ultra speeds with some oc.

and masta i understand u are mad but dont post anything against the 6800 its a good card it just u are having a problem with it i am guessing its software by the way

not only can he not edit properly, but he takes the problems he is having with his video card, and takes them as fact with all video cards of the same chipset.

Just because he is having problems doesn't mean we all do. I have a 6800GT and I love it and have had no problems with it

Got in here late, but change your memory.
AMD 64 chips don't run at 2225 timings. It's such a freaking joke what the industry is doing, touting faster memory timings when the CPUs can't run it. So what happens, is that people put the stuff in their MB, it defaults to the 2225 timings, and then they get errors in Memtest.
Go with OCZ Plantinum running at PC4200. It will have loose timings, but it doesn't matter, you'll have more headroom to OC.

I'm surprised there hasn't been an editorial on this issue, where barely anyone can run at 2225. The problem I have with it, is that's the default if you buy the Corsair XL memory (2225), and then you've got errors until you relax the timings to 2336 or 23310.

If you go on Corsair's web site, they no longer brag about 2225 timings. They've moved on to DDR2 and other marketing ideas. Meanwhile, hundreds of people are building systems right now, asking what ram to buy. My answer, OCZ.

Already got a WinXP License! But ive read that Win2k3 is better for high performance gaming? A bit expensive for just gaming use though...
