Huh?
What do you mean by first? Are you going to buy like one part a month or something? If so, buy a monitor first. It won't display anything, but it sure will look cool sitting on your desk.

...Are you trying to nef? If so, do it on OT. If not, then be more specific and THEN you'll get responses.

You really should wait till you got $900 in your hands.

if you really don't know anything at this point about what to get, go take $900 to Best Buy and let one of the genius salesmen in the computer area sell you a nice gaming machine......

lol.

Anandtech along with many other hardware sites have buyers guides. First thing I would do is look at this and then search google researching every part individually. You will learn a lot by doing your own research and then when you are done picking your own parts post here asking us our opinions on the parts you chose.

But to do that he'll need a power supply ;).

no, he could just string up some colored blinking christmas lights on the inside

That would look awsome. I've been wanting to add some bling to my PC. Maybe I'll try that.

Yea, in all seriousness, you need to make some decisions and then ask people what they think about the individual parts.
Also be sure to include exactly what you plan to use the PC for, if you plan to OC, and how often you plan to upgrade it. (If you don't know what OC is, then you can leave that out).

Those are hardly the "best" anything, but I would get the 9550, if only because it was AGP. I would never get a PCI graphics card if I planned to game.

Then again, I wouldn't spend less than $150 on a graphics card if I planned to game.

With your buget, I'd say get an 80GB HD and 512 MBs o' RAM

For a $900 budget, you can defintiely afford a better VC that those.
And why are you even considering PCI based VC's? Do yopu understand the difference between PCI, AGP, and PCI-e? If not, start there before you decide on a VC.

So if you plan to build a PC, start with the MB (mother board).
You will need to decide in order:
1. Which socket you want
2. AGP or PCI-e
3. Which chipset is best for you
4. Then finally, which MB based on budget and OC'ing plans

After that pick your CPU, RAM, and VC based on budget, OC'ing, and what you plan to use this PC for.
Then you'll need a quality PSU, case, HDD(s), possibly a FDD, and optical drive(s).

In the $800-$900 price range, you should be looking at an A64 socket 939 system IMO

Something like

nForce 4 Mobo $110
A64 Venice 3000+ $150
PCI-e 6600GT $170
Case/power supply $110
SATA hard drive $80
1gb PC3200 value ram $80
17" LCD monitor $200

Get a socket 939 motherboard with the NForce4 chipset, the slowest 90nm Athlon64 that you can afford (It will still end up pretty fast), 1GB of PC3200 DDR ram, an nVidia GeForce 6600 or ATI X800 class video card, a cheap case and an expensive power supply. Throw in a 160GB 7200rpm HDD and have a great time. This can all be done for well under your current price limit thereby allowing for upgrades if during your research you decide to step up.

Good luck and enjoy!

PS - Read the buyers guide as suggested above.

jeez yall havent really helped this guy much, he sounds new to this whole setup and the best advice ive seen was pointing him towards anandtech's guides and ike's post

heres all the parts you will have to have:
motherboard
CPU - intel or amd, though amd is better for gaming, make sure you check what socket type yours uses, it must match your motherboard in order to work!
videocard - forget pci(too slow), look at agp(getting old), or the new and fast PCI express(PCIe), these are the slots on your motherboard that your videocard plugs into, your videocard must be the correct "slot-type" to fit of coarse!
hard drive
ram
case and powersupply(aka PSU)
monitor, keyboard, mouse, and operating system(like windows)
*note* you should buy the minimum you can afford up front, then buy all the fancy extras later on. recycle ANYTHING you can for free!! (monitors, OS's and such)

note that NOT every part will work together so make sure your full setup is compatible before buying anything

here's what i would recommend:
CPU - amd athlon64 goes from 2800+ to 3700+(i think) range...budget yourself and buy the best you can
videocard - ATI or Nvidia brand cards - ATI Radeon9800pro or xt(cheapest), Nvidia 6800 GT or Ultra (mid-range), Nvidia 7800 GT or GTX(high end!)
hard drive - if you wanna start small and just have enough room for windows + some installed programs buy small(40-60gb) and then buy a second hard drive down the road for more storage)
ram - look for a good brand, i recommend OCZ, corsair, or kingston...you may wanna ask seperatly about good ram speeds and such but 512 - 1gb of ram should do you for now
case and powersupply - personal preferece but make sure your power supply is strong enough to support your parts, some cases come with PSU's but those are sometimes cheaply made. consider buying a good one seperate.

if you dont already have them:
monitor - samsung 997df (crt monitor) id stay away from lcd's unless you like bad color and saving space :p
keyboard - these are cheap, buy whatever i have an Aopen brand black kb and i love it
mouse - pretty much anything logitech will be your best bet
operating system - windowsXPpro, stay away from windows x64 edition until you get more familiar with your computer.

best places to buy parts:
www.newegg.com - my favorite, has great user reviews on all parts, free shipping on ALMOST every item, and delivery is 2-3 days max (only in the US i beleive)
www.zipzoomfly.com
www.tigerdirect.com

just keep reading up, dont take any one opinion too strongly, buy whats best for you and enjoy!
