What should I be using, my cpu is melting!

I have an amd Tbird 800mhz running at 800mhz on an Asus A7V board. I've been having some heat problems lately, and today my cpu fan died. It had been struggling lately, making loud noises on boot, and the speed was fluctuating a lot. Today it finally gave out (I know this from looking in Asus PC Probe). I'm going to take the computer in tomorrow (Thurs.) to get a new fan put on, but I'm thinking I might need a better quality fan than the normal ones that come with computers.
With a generic HSF my cpu is about 59 C under load.

I was wondering, what else could I use? A have an Aopen KF45a case, so its pretty roomy. What kind of HSF should I buy? It can't be anything too crazy, because I cannot do it myself (I suck at that kind of thing). I'd be getting the place where I bought my computer to put it on for me. So what HSF should I get? I'm thinking of getting a Globalwin FOP38 or something... www.2cooltek.com has them. Or, I might try getting some sort of dual fan (large heatsink with two fans side by side). I really don't know what I should get, but I need something very powerful to bring my cpu temperature down, and it needs to be something that isn't totally outlandish and won't cost $500 in labour (I AM NOT DOING IT MYSELF!!~!!~~). If anyone can offer any ideas/things I should buy, please tell me... thanks.

Best thing to do is to read a bunch of reviews, or go with a friend's recommendations.. check around this forum.. there are some review links in the threads.. or do a search in a search engine for reviews.. the Gwin is a good choice, but the FOP-38 is a little loud.. but if that wouldn't bother you, go for it!

[This is also posted in a seperate thread]

Hmmm, my CPU is idling at 55 °C and doing 63 °C under full load...

My case temp hovers around 35-40 °C

I've got a Asus A7V rev 1.02, bios v. 1006

It's a 1 GHz TB running 9.5*106 MHz, that means 141 MHz on RAM (PC133 VCM 2-2-2) and 1007 on CPU.

Well, I've got an desktop case to defend my honor. :)

The problem is that I've already got 1*80 mm Papst, 1*60mm Papst, a 330W Enermax PSU with 1*80 mm Papst and 1*92 mm Papst.....

My HSF is the Silverado50 cooler. (Very effective!) It has 2 "squirrel cage" fans @ 3,600 RPM which MikeWarrior2 says is A LOT. the insanity doesn't stop here, it has 50 grams of polished fine silver at the mating spot with the core. The HS is made of aluminum. (Need I say it's quite expensive?)

So maybe anyone around here can help? (Yeah yeah, i know... Get a new case, but I got no money man!)

If I'm gonna buy one it'll be Addtronics 7896A FullTower.

Ya my computer is like a mini jet anyway =P
So noise won't bother me

So.... is a gwin really simple to install? No problems installing, no complicated thermal compound stuff? Whats involved in installing it, and might I have any space problems????

Get one of these. It is equipped with a dual-ball-bearing YSTech fan that has a mean time before failure of 75,000 hours. Note that it is silver, not black. The black ones are the previous FOP32, not the FOP32-1, and they do not have a clip strong enough to compress the shock pads on the corners of the SocketA AMD processors.

Don't worry about the thermal compound thing, it's no harder than spreading butter on bread. You do need to be careful not to angle the heatsink while removing the old one and clipping down the new one, because the core of the CPU is small and not super-strong, and it can be cracked if pressure is exerted on the edge of it. I hear the FOP32-1 has such a strong clip that it can be difficult to fasten down. If it were me, I'd get one side of the clip hooked, and then grab the other side with my small 4" Vise Grip plier and use that as a handle to clip the other side.

Edit: by the way, the link is to CompuCheap, an excellent place to buy. It's run by Russ, one of the elite members here.

Doesn't look like it moves as much air as the FOP38, and I don't want to crack my 3mo old Tbird
=[

And how difficult would this be for a computer place to do? Just simple? Doesn't sound very simple, heh, needing a pair of pliers to put on a heatsink =P

I'm trying to think of a good comparison here... hmm. Difficulty level of the task is really not that high, no harder than changing the air filter on a car. You unclip the heatsink, take it off, clean up the CPU core with a cotton cloth and some rubbing alcohol if necessary, put a thin layer of thermal grease onto it (Radio Shack has some ok stuff), put a thin layer of thermal grease on the heatsink's contact area, set it on the CPU, engage one side of the clip on the socket, and engage the other side. Plug in fan, make sure it runs, close case.

Typical computer place would charge $35 an hour around here, last I knew, but considering you bought the computer from them, they should do it for free if you buy the FOP32-1 from them. I would run a FOP32-1 without hesitation on a 1.2GHz Tbird, your 800MHz will be a piece of cake for it. I really think you should not even be operating the system with the CPU fan dead, BTW.

edit: typo corrected :)

Everything mechbgone said and this:

Once you have your FOP32-1, take off the fan (only two clips), take the clip out and just bend it down a little to take away some of the tension. Re-assemble and put it on with much less effort!:D

As for now, do not run your machine without the fan! Get a new HS and/or fan fast!

It's not that hard, I just put an FOP38 on for the first time. The most annoying part is not smudging the grease around, or not squirting it all over the cpu cause pushed to hard.

Forget the FOP38. The Delta fan is too loud. I have an old Alpha Celeron cooler with two Nidec fans and they are quiet in comparison. After 10 minutes, I ended up ordering Panaflo quiet 60mm and 80mm case fans.

I also just assembled another computer with my old stuff, and the Enlight 7237, although a great bargain, comes with the worst rattling POS intake fan. Now it is time to order more!

And why take your computer somewhere to have a fan put on? A monkey could be taught to perform the task...

1) I am very bad at doing this stuff myself, ok? Im all thumbs when it comes to hardware, and dont argue "BUT ITS SO EASY!". Just trust me, if I try to do it myself, I'll screw it up no doubt.

2) Yes, I do have the internet, and THIS is my research. Websites can be biased or just trying to sell whatever, but here I can get a wide range of ideas and opinions.

Im at school right now, I cant use my computer at home (goes past 85C when its running for 5 mins, heh). Took it in to comp place to get a new fan. I'm going to get a better fan soon after... so what should I get then? Gwin fop32-1? That what everyone thinks?

Just had an idea! Get your girlfriend's/wife's/mother's hairdryer, set it on High/Cold, and point it towards your CPU's heatsink. I'm sure this works for emergencies!;)

And, the FOP32-1 should do very well for you!

Well, get yourself a styrofoam ice chest, some florinert and liquid nitrogen and... oh, n/m :)

NEVER run a system like yours w/o a fan, even for short periods of time.
