Are Vanguard funds available to you in Canada? Their Target <year> funds include USA and world stock index funds, and a bit of USA bonds.

Depending on how Canada taxes foreign investments you might want to buy that in a tax-sheltered retirement fund while (if necessary because of limits) buying the Canadian funds in a regular brokerage account.

What I don't like about "Target Year" funds is they seem like they'd be ripe for manipulation and skimming by outsiders. In other words, if I know you're going to do X, I would beat you to it and add my commission. I don't think you get many insider protections in this case because effectively you're shouting to everybody what you're going to do, before you do it.

I'll admit that I'm a sheep to the lazy investor concept, but it scares the hell out of me because people are investing 80 hours / week to get a piece of my money, and I'm not even really watching them. There are always methods to exploit laziness and apathy which I don't see as any different than millions of american's following the same advice to buy VTSMX or similar.

Canadian mutual funds suck... super high commissions. If you want to diversify take a look at some international markets.
