Hey guys,

I was once told that after a clean reformat, you should always runs windows update before installing any drivers (ok, so I do need ethernet drivers first). I was wondering if this is true, and if so, what's the reason behind it?

currently, my order on a reformat is:
delete partition, reformat, installing XP, put display to 1024x768, install LAN or Wireless drivers, run windows update, then install all other drivers.
is this the correct order for doing things?

I've seen such advice on numerous occasions, but I've never paid much attention to it.

Instinctively I do prefer to install the latest SP ASAP, but I doubt this has any real effect. It used to be important in the old days, when drivers would clearly state that e.g. NT4 SP3 was required. (I believe, but don't really know, that SP3 introduced some fundamental changes back then)

Win9x/ME was always much more vulnerable (by design!), and I quietly suspect many XP tweak "experts" built up much of their experience with Windows Toystation, and are now busy trying to find ways where XP display similar traits. (wasted time since XP has little/nothing in common)

IMO, unless something is backed up by KB references, detailed benchmarks or you acknowledge the qualifications of the source, then it is seldom worth taking note. (yeah, that includes anything I might've said)
