I'm not a newbie but I always feel I get riped off when I buy a new HD. I know it's because manufacturers
say a gigqbyte is 1,000,000 megabytes. But I'm curious as to what your size your drive is after formatting.
My Maxtor d740x, 40gig is 37.2 in Win XP(ntfs).

37.2Gb sounds about right - a 40Gb hard drive is actually 39.06Gb (is my maths right? (40x1000)/1024). Obviously cluster size and partition tables affect the final overall size.

My 40Gb drive at home formatted to NTFS is about 38Gb.

Yes thats right. I always remember almost crying when I got my first PC. My brand new 2.1 GB Seagate drive appeared as a 1.9 Gb!!
