What shopping cart service do most sites use?

I know someone looking into making an online store and needs some kind of easy to use service. I see a bunch from a Google search but I am wondering if anyone has experience with this sort of thing.

Ok, stupid question because I don't do many shopping sites. Does the cart just manage a shopping cart or does it access a payment authorization house too?

Only shopping cart, you need to get a third party solution like a merchant account.

Also don't forget you need a static IP, an SSL Certificate and of course reliable/secure web hosting.

I'd suggest OsCommerce for a shopping cart. It intergrates well serveral payment systems. Its a very powerful script, don't be deceived by the fact that it is free :p

I have had some experience with x-cart on a customers site, and let me just say that its one hell of a thing to customize :(, from what I know about you, you know you're way around php. :)

Like Ross said you will need hosting, and a IP address (expect somewhere need $2 a month) and a ssl cert. I'll leave the hosting recommendations to Ross, but I suggest a $49 quickssl at ev1servers.net. Its generated instantly and is extremely easy for the host to install, compared to those cheap chained certs.

I've seen a TON of sites pop up in the past year that have used OSCommerce. I've played with it a bit, it's incredibly easy to get up and running. Being free doesn't hurt either.:)

I still think yahoo! merchant accounts are the best way for non tech-savy people to get an e-commerce site up and running.
