What shipping company is best for *large* items?

Say I wanted to ship something large and fragile to another person across the country. What would be the safest, most cost-efficient company to use?

How large and how fragile? Contrary to what most people will tell you, I have had nothing but great results from UPS. If you want to minimize the chance of it being broken, send it overnight. Pack it very well, using extra padding around the outside of the item... and you shouldnt have any problems. Get insurance on it just in case though.

drive it there yourself. Eccspecially if you want it to arrive for xmas

edit: on a more serious note, yes go with ups.

As big as a soft-top assembly for a convertible...and as fragile as...uh...well, a soft-top assembly for a convertible 😕

i've found fed-ex ground to be cheaper than ups, and faster (4 business days vs. 5 crosscountry = 3 days real time difference) however make sure you insure your package. if your thing is one of a kind, i wouldn't ship it at all.

that's big. in that case, i don't know.

Yeah, that's pretty big. No matter who you go with... if they accept it at all... you are going to be paying more than you want. Oversize package + high weight + insurance + overnight/2-3 day = $$$.

Wow...interesting...so is it best to get UPS provided-packing materials or is there a better place to buy them before having UPS pick it up?

Call an independent trucking agency and have them ship it. I don't know if UPS will take an item that large.
Thats what I was thinking. I've had good luck shipping large items via freight carriers.

Also may want to try Consolidated Freightways, they both do very well.

I dunno, they just filed bankruptcy.

Doh! okay... nevermind. It's been a while since I've had to deal with the shipping side of the business. Go with Fedex Freight.

I jsut shipped a 107lb transmission from california to pennsylvania for $61, including $1800 insurance via FedEx ground.

I once shipped an elephant from Bombay to Bangalore via DHL...granted the DHL guy kinda just got up on top and rode the elephant for the journey, but he knew what he was doing! Does that help?
