What settings do you use to encode MP3s?

i don't do MP3. AAC 256kbps for Albums, Apple Lossless for Live stuff.

Aren't there different forms of VBR, such as VBR New, old, etc...?

320 / VBR Nothing less is good enough.

FLAC or OGG, only use OGG for the cellphone to save space.... and that would be either quality 3 or 2.
