A poll on a computer hardware enthusist forum is hardly representitive of the general population. Just design your webpages for 800x600 resolution!

My HS used 640x480 on their computers because the librarians ran the labs and they didn't know how to work a computer. I was trying to do a report but it is so damn hard when you can fit only a paragraph at a a time on the screen. They weren't tiny ass monitors either, relatively new. What a waste. I asked if I could change mine but they said if I change any of the settings I would get a 3 day suspension and wouldn't be allowed back in the computer lab for the rest of the year.

First of all, 1280x960 is a true resolution. Multiply 640x468 times two and you get 1280x960. It's a valid resolution. 1280x1024 is not properly proportioned and skews the image.

nik (uses 1280x960 on his 17" and 1600x1200 on his 19")

Website stats across many sites I'm affiliated with/use reveal that users mostly use 1024x768.
1152 x 864 here as well. On a 17" monitor it seems to be the pefect balance between desktop area and default text size.

As noted above, 1280x960 is the CORRECT resolution, as it keeps the 4:3 aspect ratio. Think about it, what is 640 * 2? 1280. Now what is 480 * 2? 960. 1280x1024 has 64 more pixels in the vertical resolution than it is supposed to.

Depends

Either 1600x1200 @ 75Hz
or 1280x1024 @ 85Hz

I love my VPR Matrix 17" monitor of death, most 17"ers can't even do 1600x1200 ;).
