I agree with Superwormy; you're best bet would be to use percentages so that the page can resize itself.

Btw, my resolution is 1152 x 864.

Just use percentages and design the page so that it looks good at any size. That's your best bet. This way, people using 640x480 on some POS will see your page just fine, and these crazy bastard anandtechers using 213490182342 by 32418902314 resolution will still be able to comfortably view your site.

Im bumping this thread becuase im just not sure... isint there a way to make the browser only show "your webpage" like whatever size you make (so if someone with a high screen res. looks at your website he doesnt see a small square with text and whahtnot (your website) and a bunch of blank area...?

I always use 1600x1200 so aim high :D

Seriously I dont know many people who have a computer less than 5 years old who do not use 1024x768 and above. 800x600 IMO is too restrictive.

1024x768...

but I still develop for 800x600, but I put a disclaimer on my site about 1024x768

All the logs I've gathered from my various sites indicate 800x600 to be minimum, but 1024x768 is the optimum. Many power users use 1280xXXX ... but that can result in extremely small text.

The industry standard is 800x600 or 1024x768 so you cannot go wrong either way.

EDIT>> Don't forget to account for the browser chrome, so use 770 wide if you're designing to 800x600.

A little help from flashkit.com boards directed me to: http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/99/41/index3a.html ... looks like I was a bit off with my calculation, but it's always worked for me. Remember you're designing for all browsers so you have to find that common ground.

I design for 800x600, however, if you're careful, you can make it look good at all of the res's above it too.
