Assuming you were doing something you enjoy and the requirements for being happy are: being able to own a comfortable home and a couple cars, being able to support a wife and possibly children (1-3), and being able to go out every once in a while without having to worry about how much it is going to cost. Obviously cost of living is different in different locations but take your best guess.

They wouldn't. I'm asking how much you think you could be happy with not how much you would prefer. Read the original post for clarification.

Depends on what kind of job, and the living standards and average living cost. $100K is nice here, but is certainly worth way less in NYC/Bay Area than in some other places.

If I get an ex-PAT job in China, South America, Eastern Europe and make ~$30K/year, it'd be equivalent of living in the USA for ~$200K/year.

I voted $60 to $80 K. Assuming I stay where I am at now, my family would be comfortable with plenty left over for savings for kids school and retirement. I'm not there yet, but hope to be...

After going from a miserable career of fixing cars, to my current job which I absolutely love...

Money isn't nearly as important as enjoying what you do. Period.

Well, I was pretty happy with my $85K/yr income, but the job sucked. So now I'm going into the army...

That's exactly what I don't want to happen to me. I want to do something I enjoy and I really don't care about having a BMW and a big house and upgrading my computer every month, etc. but I do care about being able to support a family. If that requires doing something something I don't enjoy I'll do it.

Hmmmm, I am getting loans right now for school and they seem to be enough. After I get the loans and pay for classes I get about $8,000. I would say $15,000 a year after taxes and I would be living large.

That's pretty much my thinking too. Being in the military takes me out of the job interview rat race, and guarantees me enough income to survive. In addition and more importantly, I'll be doing something meaningful with my life, something that keeps me out of a cubicle. I'm single with no kids, so no family to support or worry about at this time. Maybe in the future, though, who knows..?

Heh, I make 11/hr now, which ain't bad for someone fresh out of HS I guess. It pays the bills, but it doesn't leave a ton of fun money.

If I made 40 grand and kept my apt and didn't change my living conditions too much (which I'm very happy with) then I'd be peachy.
