This week I reached out for (oh, no, not another) a new diet soda from Coca-Cola. Didn't I just do this two weeks ago ... with Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda? This week's wonder diet elixir is Coke Zero --with "no calories and no compromise."

This is the ninth version of a low-calorie Coke .
.. or 10th, if you count Tab. Coke Zero joins Diet Coke, Caffeine-Free Diet Coke, Diet Coke with Lemon, Diet Coke with Lime, Diet Cherry Coke, Diet Vanilla Coke, Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda and Coca-Cola C2.

The goal is obvious: world domination ... or extra shelf space in the soda aisle at the supermarket. Financially, they're pretty much the same. Coke could open its own store now: Diet Cokes R Us.

Here's the Coke Zero blueprint: cola soda sweetened with a blend of aspartame and acesulfame potassium. I love acesulfame potassium! I think foods that were on my chemistry final exam taste great.

Total calories: zero (get it?). Fat grams: nada. Dietary fiber: zilch. Carbs: bupkis. Manufacturer's suggested retail price: $3 for a six-pack of 20-ounce bottles (your mileage may vary).

So, what's so Zero about Coke Zero? Don't plain old Diet Coke and the rest already have zero calories? It's the taste. And that's where Coke Zero is anything but a goose egg.

Basically, Coke Zero starts with the cola formula of Coke Classic and uses aspartame and acesulfame potassium as the sweeteners instead of sugar. Sounds like a sure winner to me.

Diet Coke, the world's No. 1 diet cola, uses a formula more similar to New Coke (remember that wrong turn?), which is really old, forgotten Coke since they trash-canned New Coke nearly two decades ago.http://www.heraldextra.com/modules.php?...&sid=58927&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0

I actually like the new drink since I find it to almost replicate the normal flavor. With that being said, Diet Mountain Dew still owns the world.
