<< I dont get it, all you people bought engines with VTEC yet dont know what it is? >>

too most people it's a catch phrase or it's considered gobs of power.

RaoulDuke-

Yes it is a nice catchphrase isn't it? Ever bothered to take a look behind this name and how it is different to other vvt systems?

brtspears2-

this thread is not about what vtec is, its about WHEN the valves are controlled by the high-performance lobes.

To answer the original poster's question...I have a 2001 Accord Coupe EX (2.3L I-4) and I was told that VTEC engages at 4200rpm. I saw some dyno charts in a Honda enthusiast magazine that seemed to concur. The whole power band is pretty smooth, though, perhaps too smooth. You don't get that kick/boost/jolt/etc. as the revs build. It just spools but never really gets explosive. The 2.3L I-4 SOHC in the Accord is tuned for lower-end torque (unlike the DOHC which is tuned for high-end power) and I often shift before 3000rpm, much to my amazement. In fact, I rarely wind the engine out...it just seems out of character to redline the engine. It's more of a cruising car, not a stoplight racer.

I reckon. If you wanted to drag race at every stoplight you wouldn't have bought an accord.....you probably would have bought some GM peice of junk.....

Mithrandir, you must get great gas mileage. When my friend's wife drove his '98 2.3L 5spd LX for a period of time, she got 30 MPG in mixed driving. That's freaking amazing for a mid-size.

People, u need to know that there's a difference between Vtec and DOHC Vtec.

Regular Vtec pretty much exist in every single honda engine, their job is to save gas.

DOHC Vtec, or for the racers the "real" Vtec (The above-mentioned Vtec are usually being refered as the Vtec-Lite), is different, it's geared for Hi-performance, hi-power output ratings, those engine u can Definitely FEEL when Vtec kicks in. I driven my friend's 98 Prelude and when Vtec Kicks in at 5k, the engine sounds different and the car just GOES. and too all u people who've only driven a Vtec or a Turbo or none of them but NOt Both.. IT'S DIFFERENT!!! Vtec engine can NEVER hope to produce as much torque as Turbos do. Vtec needs to rev to get power, they have sh!t for torque. And they FEEL different too. My old Turbo Merkur's T3 kicks in at 3000 @ 9psi and 14psi @ 4500+, And I tell u... It's first a Turbo spool sound.. then there's that period of Turbo Lag (Bigger the turbo, bigger the lag), then it's the neck snapping feeling of a sudden Jumps in the Torque that really push u back.... Turbo increase the Torque more than the HP really in terms of feel.

DOHC Vtec in the other hand engages Right away (It's only a damn pin that switches between the regular loop and the hi-flo loop). When it kicks it u don't really get a big snap in the neck like a Turbo because it GOT NO TORQUE, but your car will just suddenly launch faster, u won't really feel it exactly but u see the damn speedometer goes up and up and up... well.. u get the Idea.. The Vtecs I driven (a 95 GSR and a 98 Prelude and a 00 SI) are all Very Fast.. just.. no torque.

I now drive a VW Jetta VR6, I'm sorry but with the amoung of Torque I produce in that Car I can waste ANY Honda Stock for Stock up to the GSR specs and I'll win for sure. With a little mods.. 😀

O yes, how many miles to the gallon does 'stangs get? How bout integras/civics/etc? Must kinda suck driving a v-8 now. For me, this ls-400 is breakin my bank since my work is 30min each way, everyday. So I fill up premium every 4-5 days, costs $35 minimum - $50. 🙁

So who feels like racing and burning all that expensive fuel? 🙂

Thanks mithrandir 2001 and atomicbomberman that's kinda what I was thinking but wasn't sure. How come you picked the Jetta VR6 over the 1.8t (was considering it myself)?

v6 mustangs are supposed to get 30 mpg, integras about there and civcs at like 38 =P all highway of course

Because at that time a 1.8T cost way more than a 96 VR6.. and I like the VR6.. they're very torquey and VERY fun to drive.. I driven a Golf 1.8T, they're fun too but nowhere as fun as the VR6

btw.. for all u VW fans out there.. next generation of VR6 will be 24V and hav Variable Cam Timing =)

the next generation of 1.8T will have 180 (they'll call it 170 to not piss audi off 😀), and will be the first engine NOT MADE BY HONDA to meet the ULEV standard =)

I find it interesting that the guys from the US place much importance on economy-I used to live in the UK, now Hong Kong and cost of fuel must be multiples more costly yet in both these places we don't have such a cot-of-running mentality-in HK its either based on looks or purchase price-in UK its very much geared towards the car's driving characteristics-but neither of these places has as many gas guzzlers, I guess-vtec is a good compromise between good power output and and economy.

well don't u guys still have a massive tax on cars in hk? if u can afford a car.. and the space to park it you should be able to afford gas😛 cars are generally small..well less giant suvs atleast😛

. It's first a Turbo spool sound.. then there's that period of Turbo Lag (Bigger the turbo, bigger the lag),

read about some kewl no lag turbos in the works. have a electric motor to instantly bring the thing up when you need it... when its not then it gets recharged by the turbo🙂
