The only story driven RPG that could possibly hope to compete with those two games that is "on the horizon" would be Bioware's spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate 2 called Dragon Age.

I'm beginning to think that DA is a cruel joke. Vaporware? They've been saying it's coming for several years now, and all they have to show are 4 screenshots from 2004. Anyway, as soon as EA takes over, kiss it goodbye.

Actually, I think it's fair to say that Fallout 3 will probably be a "real" RPG, despite the hybrid shooter elements. Bethesda has confirmed real conversation trees, not the silly topic thing, and they seem to be taking it seriously as a Fallout game.
