What rights are you willing to give up?

This has been a topic I haven't seen yet. (Maybe I just missed it).

I'm sure everyone's heard that Ben Franklin quote:
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Alot of emphasis has been put on airplanes, airports, internet privacy and encryption. Personally, I'm not down with the anti-cryptography sentiment that seems to exist in the government nowadays.

How about giving up no rights, and instead fighting and eradicating terrorism.

well yeah, i guess that's the point of this post. I'm not really down with giving up any rights or liberties. 'Cause if we do then there's no real point in all of this, as the basis of what America stands for is to protect my rights and liberties.

I'll give some up for the duration of the war but I better have it back afterwards...

Note: If I die in the conflict, then my little brothers, girlfriend, etc. better be better off because of it all

I would give up no rights guaranteed me by the constitution of the United States without it being duly voted on by a great majority of our citizens. I would however respect rules and regulations which limit my access to secure areas to ensure the safety of all. I think we need to stop confusing rights with priveledges. And most of all I support limiting people who are not citizens of our nation from free movement in around our country. This would have to be without exception since terrorists can eminate from any foriegn land. The safety and security of our people MUST be a priority over worries that we may hurt the feelings of or insult a foreigner. Most all American families are immigrants at one time or another in history, and all had to at one time or another EARN their rights to be citizens of the United states of America. It is our duty to preserve those rights by ensuring their validity, by making what ever sacrifices are necessary to guarantee that they will stand the test of time for our children's sake.

I'll give up the "right" to breeze through airport security, to carry a knife aboard a plane, to ride on a plane where the cockpit is accessible by passengers, etc.

I won't give up privacy, the right to travel freely itself, etc.

how about we get rid of the rights of every damn foreigner who want to to be able to get a fricken student visa or work visa and come to our country and roam freely.

I think we should stop giving VISAs to people from all islamic countries. We gotta keep MUCH tighter reigns on who we let in the country.

That's gotta be the most ignorant comment I've ever seen. Why should we punish the masses for the actions of a few? Should we not give anyone of the Christian faith VISAs because of what's happening in Ireland?

I think we should give up every right we have.
The government should install two way televisions everywhere so they can hear what everyone is saying in case a terrorist should be speaking. The government should also monitor every form of communication in case a terrorist is communicating or someone is breaking the law.
Also the government should make the english dictionary smaller so they can more easily pick up certain words that terrorists might say or type. To shorten the dictionary for example, instead of saying this is really really bad, you would say this is doubleplusungood.
New rules should be passed that restrict what people can do so that the government can more easily find terrorists. Rules controlling everything everyone does and strict penalties for lawbreakers. Ideally torturing the lawbreaker until they believe 2+2=5 and once they are broken they should be turned into perfect law abiding citizens.

Any of this sound familiar?
If we sit on our hands and do nothing, this will be our reality soon.
Never thought in my lifetime that foreign countries might have more freedoms than Americans. :(

I wonder what the Libertarians and ACLU folks think about this stuff? Especially in light of Ashcroft's request for changing various laws regarding wiretapping, etc.

I'm just concerned this kind of increased power might (in the future) get abused. I just hope the ACLU watches this matter closely and fights any bad or wrong laws that get enacted.

Some laws on the books now probably need changed because they are outdated and not applicable to today's society. But any changes regarding our right to privacy (within sensible reason) need to be looked at carefully.

I am not giving up any rights. They used to have U.S. Marshalls on all airplanes after the 70's hijackings. They took them off domestic flights and kept them on internaitonal. If they had been there none of this would have happenned.

Ha Ha, good book. I think more people should read it.

I would not want to give up any rights, but I would be willing to make some small sacrifices while traveling to insure safety. Our security has proven inadequate (anybody who disagrees with this statement is insane) and I think it is up to all of us to agree to stricter airport security measures.

I will give up my right to burn the American flag.
The right to carry lethal weapons aboard passenger planes, the right to b!tch and gripe when someone singles me out for a search..and start screaming and making a scene til they give up and let me through.

I will give up those rights gladly
