I am assuming you are considering this for self defense reasons.

AR-15.

Low recoil, accurate, very good sights, and has high capacity mags at reasonable prices. It is a good rifle to learn on.

Go with one of the better makers: Bushmaster or Rock River Arms. Both make excellent rifles.
A base model will run about $650.

AK clones can be had for closer to $300. They will have more recoil and worse sights, but are as reliable as it gets.

That's a horrible suggestion for self defense. It is not concealable and would penetrate many walls easily with lethal force. A handgun would be a much better choice for a home/self defense weapon. Or a shotgun if funds are tight.

Yeah I dont really want anything super powerful .223 is more than enough for me. I may end up with a handgun but I would really prefer a rifle as I dont particularly plan on using it to actually bring harm to someone - Roscoe can do that for me.

I have one rifle that was bought in 1995..it is still in the factory wrap and cosmolined.. if I had bought a comp with that same $100 it would not be worth $250 today..now..would it..?

Could have been worse he could have been trying to push himself on the thread. At least he said please :) lets not turn this into a gun debate, no one is going to sway my opinion - its not like im going to drive down the road taking shots at people - I am going to shoot it on a range and keep it in my closet with a triggerlock.

Ditto what everyone else says about the Ruger 10/22...best bet for a inexpensive .22. If you don't know gun safty, see if a gin store or range offers safty class'. Good luck and have fun!:)

I got a Mossberg Mariner shotgun for home defense. Nice and inexpensive, Nitride coated so it cleans easily. The 10/22 is an excellent choice in a beginner's rifle. Also, there are some great .17 varmint rifles that are VERY accurate. Text

Good luck on your search!

I've got a Ruger 10/22 which was bought around 1967 that has served me well.
If you want something to plink with or small game hunt you can't beat it in my
book.

I definately am looking into safety. A marine friend of mine is coming back to town in August and he will show me the ropes. I wont be going to a range until he is in town anyway. He will be shooting a glock and a modified shotgun (dont know the whole list but he has hand grip and cartridge storage on the outside of the gun it looks sweet.)

Same here...I don't find it stupid. Animals really don't know better...the guy that brakes into my home should have, and he will be taught a lesson.

Well if you really wanted a rifle to shoot people with I wouldn't recommend a .22 caliber rifle then. :)

My first rifle was a Ruger Mini 14, I loved that gun, but sold it a year later when I got the whole gun thing out of my system.

It isnt my intention to kill anyone :) but thanks for the advice. PLUS if the gun has no recoil I can shoot them more than once right?

Why? I have a child and I own 12 guns (half of which are handguns). I keep them locked in a gun safe that only I know the combination to. You people that spout off this kind of crap really have no clue do you? You just believe all the anti-gun hype you read/hear about in the news?

When my son is old enough I will teach him how to shoot and to have proper respect for guns. It isn't rocket science...more like common sense.

Edit-Really, you should be more concerned if he has a pool than whether or not he owns guns.

If you want a cheap rifle get an SKS, they about as durable as AKs and far cheaper.

If you want a quality rifle, get yourself an M1 Garand or an M1A (civillian M-14).

7.62Nato or 7.62Soviet > 5.56

Walmart also is carrying a 10/22 with a 20" SS barrel for ~$208. I couldn't locate this gun on ruger's website, or at galleryofguns.com

You may wanna check that second site out for any gun you do chose to buy and see if it's cheaper.

Ah......I'd like to get one of those. :)

Never mind. It's your God-given right to own lethal weapons. Who am I to tell you what you can and can't do?

...but even FMJ 5.56 rounds will have less wound potential after penetrating a wall than even 9mm handgun rounds

The 5.56mm NATO FMJ doesnt do much better than a 22LR after it gets under 2600fps, and it is preferable to have it still going 2700+ fps at impact. The various expanding 5.56's dont penetrate walls well, at least not with much velocity. Sure, you cant use an AR-15 for CCW, but no one but D. Feinstein is going to think/say that you can, anyway.

I'm not saying I advocate it for home defense (the 5.56 doesnt have the terminal ballistics for shooting people that I would like to see, JMO), but the 5.56mm isnt a horrible choice.

Just don't buy an M16 if you plan to use it in your house. My cousin's can go through a 1/2" steel plate at about 50 yards, and it put a hole right through a pine tree at a similar distance when I shot it.

I'd buy a .22 if it's your first gun.

Home defense?

I'll say what others have said, shotgun or hand gun.

If a handgun, might I suggest a .40 cal
