what resolution should I gear for?

okay so I just got a new tv, a samsung 46" LCD
it does 1080p

should i be gearing to max out my computer to do 1080p? or should I be aiming to just max out my settings for a 1080i image?

i've yet to try my xbox360 to compare gaming at the two resolutions, but i've read its a hardly noticeable amount of detail between 1080p and 1080i

so what should i aim for? so i know what benchmarks to review

Both resolutions offer 1920x1080, only the 1080i is interlaced on the vertical I think (hence the i next to the 1080). Well, I guess, for a video card it would mean 1920x540 pixels to render as opposed to 1920x1080 so, theoretically, it would take twice as much computing power for the latter resolution to be rendered. However if you can afford a 1080p tv then why not "invest" in a 8800GTX or similar stuff that can easily handle such resolutions? Hope I'm not imparting way wrong info here

For games I would say you want 1080P

well 720p/1080i is what normal HD users on xbox360 using the component cables see, right?
