I was planning on getting a Canon S100, but the resolutions are only 1600x1200 and 640x480. I think the 1600 setting is way too high, the jpegs are huge! and I think 640 is too low, what do you all normally use for everday shooting. Should I get the S10 which takes 1280 res also? mannn......

I've got the S100 and I think the limited pic sizes are worth comprimising for. I usually end up cropping/resizing my pics to weird sizes anyway...ultra small for thumbnails, something smaller than the huuuuge 1600x1200 for my desktop, emailing, etc. Even when I use my friend's Kodak DCwhatever and take 1280's I usually do some work on em in Photoshop. There's not too many pics I don't fool with, so I might as well resize em while I'm at it. Trust me, own the camera for a day and you'll forget about the size limitations! :)

I take all of my photos at the highest resolution my camera supports which is 1152x864. I've got a few CF cards, so it doesn't matter to me how big the files are.

I usually takes my pics at uncompressed mode and that takes up alot of memory, but my laptop is always nearby so I don't have to worry about running out of memory. You can always compress it later on.

My camera maxes out at 1024 X 768 and I take all of my pictures at that. Then again, I've got 32MB Smartmedia so I can get away with that.

Max res on my camera(yes, I know it sucks, but I mainly use it just to take pictures of the drunk people coming home at night, to show them the next morning)

Has anyone tried the new 3 or 4 megapixel cameras? I'm thinking of getting one, but wonder if I really need it.

I take ALL my pictures at 2160x1440 (3 Megapixels). Sometimes I even take shots in TIFF mode - 9 MB each... :Q (My 3 MP JPEGs are in the 600-700 KB range usually, and the compression is just a tad too high for my tastes.) For good prints, the photo shops recommend at least 200 pixels per inch. For my 3 MP images, I only get 180 ppi for an 8x12 print, although I think it's pretty damn good. The 133 ppi from a 2 MP camera is pushing it though, and anything less than 100 would be unacceptable IMHO, unless it's for posters. Plus, having extra pixels allows you to crop.

If you're planning on replacing a film camera, I would suggest a 2 MP camera at the bare minimum, and preferably 3 MP. However, not all 2 MP cameras are the same. Same goes for 3 MP. If this purely for web viewing, etc. then lower resolutions are acceptable though.
