What looks better between 1280x1024 versus 1280x960 depends on what monitor you have. 1280x960 is not always better.
 
For gaming, 1280x960 is a lot better than 1280x1024. I tried both in a game, the latter made everything flat. But I'm on a CRT, I suppose that resolution is only for LCD's.

In general thats correct. Most CRTs have an aspect ratio that favors 1280x960 while LCDs favor 1280x1024.
