What replaces Norton System Works?

Since my Symantec System Works 2005 wont work with WIN XP BASIC HOME, what can I install instead that does what Systems Works does?

Nothing because there isn't anything yet. Norton is beta testing norton 360 and when it's done it will be the next big thing from them. Iolo claims their system mechanic 7 professional is vista capable but the version I bought yesterday wouldn't run right even after dling the most current updates.

Windows one live care works real good with Vista, and you can use the beta for at least 90 days before you need to buy it. Another good utility System Mechanic 7 also works with Vista. www.iolo.com

Norton Systemworks has a lot of snakeoil. Norton AV 2007 works in Vista, and Symantec has revamped the program for 2007. Less bloat and the detection rate is excellent. However if you can acquire Symantec Corp 10.2 that would be even better.

On my own pc's I'll use NOD32 v2.7 + Vista firewall w/ advanced features enabled.

When I tried to install NAV 2007 I recd the "not compatible with VISTA" warning and then the program exited. The warning continued that NAV 2007 was compatible ONLY with WIN XP.

Does NOD32 work with XP?

Thanks.

The last time I saw Norton Systemworks do something useful was in 1994. I've seen Norton's Disk Repair tool churn on a hard drive for hours, and then say, "Sorry, but I couldn't repair it". Then I'd run Checkdsk /f and it fixed the problem nearly instantly.

Products purchased under our service plans, such as Norton Antivirus 2006 and Norton Antivirus 2007, are eligible for Microsoft® Windows Vista? compatibility update subject to production release of the Windows Vista operating system within the service period. Users must have a valid subscription to be eligible for the Windows Vista compatible update.

Yes, NOD32 v2.7 works in all versions of XP & Vista.

It says you need 10.2 for Vista. Maybe you can try it, then report back with the results. 🙂

You shouldn't be using NSW anyways. You know better, that ruins your system.

AVG Free works fine on Vista.

Low overhead too.

I haven't used the Norton suite of resource hogs since 1999. And I haven't paid for A/V since then either.

John,

Remember us talking about the beta version of 2007NAV? LOL. So it isn't as bad as previous years huh? By the way, have you tried the Norton 360 beta? I might install it on a test box and see how bloated it is. Thanks for the update regarding 2007 though, I thought all this time it was still just as bloated as prior versions.

I ran nod32 up until I bought liveonecare and it was ok. Since it wasn't the full product I didn't get the full functionality of the software.

Yea the NAV '07 beta blew chunks! :disgust: It was just as heavy, if not heavier than the 04-06 versions. Thank goodness Symantec listed to some of its users and refined the final version.

Over the past ten years, Symantec (formerly Norton), once a GREAT software manufacturer, has taken up the hobby of serially buying really good software companies and turning that really good software into useless junk or throwing it away entirely:

PCTools (the world's greatest PC Utility): Purchased, trashed, and then dropped completely.
WinFax Pro: Purchased, trashed (when XP came out) and then became unsupported.
PC Anywhere: Purchased and trashed (when XP came out).

The orginal Norton Utilities (1987 or so) were great. But they became bloated and worthless over the years. 🙁

I installed System Works just to get Ghost 2003 working. I haven't tested it, but the ability to start and make image backups of partitions might not work. I'll test it later. I know the Ghost image reader worked, as I was able to extract some files from an image file.

While I have Vista Business, which does have a backup program, it basically only has one option that is similar to Ghost, "complete PC backup." This is useless to me, as I have 700GB of hard drive space with a whole ton of video files, big ones, and other stuff I don't want to backup. What I like about Ghost is I can make a perfect image file of my main boot partition, which only has about 35GB of files, so this is practical.

While some of the other Vista Business backup options might be what I want, I will surely miss the ability to start image files from within Windows, that is, if it doesn't work.

'Some of its users' definately includes folks like you, there where more than a few quotes I took from users here regarding the previous verions while a number of us where on our performance/size jihad 😉

I don't want to make this a Symc thread vs a Vista thread (so you can ping me back in PM if you like) but I did want to say:

PCTools (the world's greatest PC Utility): Purchased, trashed, and then dropped completely.

PCTools was a straight copy of NU (including the UI if you remember). Those teams merged, it was never 'dropped completely'

WinFax Pro: Purchased, trashed (when XP came out) and then became unsupported.

Faxing basically moved to the internet, the team didn't respond quickly and missed that opportunity. There is no revenue in desktop faxing today (free in xp, free in vista, online solutions are generally good, etc)

PC Anywhere: Purchased and trashed (when XP came out).

Not sure why you say that, PcAnywhere is still being updated with new versions. RemoteDesktop and GoToMyPC eats into a big part of it's prosumer business but it still is widely used on the corporate side.

actually I think faxing is not included in either Vista Home Basic or Premium, which is a step backwards from XP Home, and I'm not sure what to use now for the occasional fax I need to send or receive ?

I don't understand why MS thinks only businesses send and receive faxes..
