What removes Sharpie marker writing?

No, no body parts. This photographer comes in complaining he can't read some of his pictures. I see he's labeled the CD on the "Staples" branded gold side.

Then I flip it over and he's written the same thing on the silver burned side. WTF? He actually looked at me and said "Is that bad?". I could only shake my head in disbelief.

He of course deleted the originals from the hard drive (which I'm trying to recover now), and apparently he's new to CD burning because he did this to 10 CD's

So, is there anything that will remove the Sharpie ink without destroying the CD?

Update So Dirtboy's trick worked! I'm able to read and copy the files from the CD's now. Dirtboy for Elite!

And thanks to everyone else who contributed ideas!

Hmm.....Rubbing alcohol, lighter fluid, mineral spirts. No idea if any of these would destroy the CD.

ftw.

we used to replace dry-erase markers with permanant markers at school. substitute teachers hated us.

if its the plastic side, you can probably remove it using one of those disc doctor resurfacing devices. Sanding with super high grit(2500+) may also fix it.

Do you mean write over the Sharpie marked part with a dry erase marker?

Exactly, go over with the dry erase, then wipe off. I don't think it'll damage the CD, but I am not chemistical surgeon.

Yep and then erasing it.

This works great on whiteboards when someone uses a permanent marker by mistake.

Brasso will remove scratches from CDs and would probably remove the marker as well. I have done this to many previously unreadable CDs and afterwards they worked fine.

Holy sh1t. The dry erase marker took it right off!! Now to see if I can read it all. If this works Dirtboy I'll owe you big time because you just may have saved this guy's @ss.

Edit: Thanks for the Brasso idea on scratches. I've got some of that stuff at home.

Yup...liberally go over the permanent marker with the dry erase then erase. Repeat if necessary.

Wow. I just tested this on a junk CD and it worked. Learn something new every day. 🙂

EDIT: Be careful how hard you press with the dry erase marker. It could leave some fine scratches in the CD. Just one or two quick swipes over the desired area.

Take a new pencil - lick the eraser, then rub the eraser over the text with some pressure. Seriously - it should make it come off and the eraser is soft so no scratches 🙂
