What r the Best H.D "IBM, WD, Seagate, Maxtor" ..?

they're all about the same... except maybe certain model is faster, quiets, but not a combination of everything...

failure rates are all the same, each brand gets a few percentage.. no one brand to our knowledge has lowest...
 
its fast but not the quietest.. so like i said, certain one is faster but another could be quieter.. failure rate, still the same across the board..
 
Western Digital right now is the fastest and the best in my opinion if you go witht their special editions in
the 100 and 120 gig flavors. I have the 100 gig special edition with the 8 meg buffer and it screams. And it
is very reliable as well!
 
Maxtor comes first in reliability field in my mind !! i have used many many maxtor drive before...

when it comes to speed, i think Western digital has slight edge over competition (8mb cache, unprecendented for a IDE drive)

THAT is the truth! Everybody has their favorites. Blah blah is the fastest, quietest, reliablest 🙂o), etc.
 
From my personal expirence.

I have not had any problems with Western Digital or Maxtor.
Owned a Conner drive years and years ago with many problems (Do they still make Conner these days)
 
In different instances I have had both excellent luck and problems with each brand of drive in large public computer labs and personally built machines - but I will say out of that group, the Maxtor RMA policy is top notch. Basically if you ever have a problem with a drive, they're return a new (probably refurbished) HDD to you within a few days. Of course that's still a major PITA, but at least it does offer some assurance. Then again, I think Western Digital is also offering a similar return policy if it's needed now.
 
As for what happened to Connner? They were bought out by Seagate, as Quantam was bought out by Maxtor. Anyway I would say Maxtor is the better drive out there, Ive used them in every system build up since 1995, Ive never had any problems with them. They defintly improved over the years as im sure most HD's have I currentley have a Diamondmax 60 that I picked up at new egg for $70 and an OEM compuse (Maxtor Diamond) 20gb as well. In my Pentium Rig I have a Maxtor Diamond 60 30gb been in use lil over a year.
 
I wouldn't use IBM or WD right about now.. times change though, I used to love WD.

I'd either buy Seagate, Quantum or Maxtor (Maxtor and Quantum are now pretty much the same)

I have 2 Maxtor D740X-6L's and like the reviews have said, they REALLY ARE silent!! they are fast(!) and very very quiet, I love these drives!
Also, I have built several PC's on the platform of the Maxtor drive, and no problems... Same with the Quantum Fireball plus AS.. great drive. Overall, for the price/performance, you can't argue that the Maxtors are the best.. Great value. 🙂
 
The only ones I'd avoid are the IBM's, particularly any 75GXP's still in stock. Lots of problems and denials, class action lawsuit, etc.

Worked on a friend's machine recently that has a Maxtor and a WD. The interesting thing about this modern maxtor is that it's slimmer top to bottom, probably a good thing for stacked drive installations as it would obviously be easier to cool.

Other than that, take the best deal you can find between Maxtor, WD and Seagate in the rpm/buffer/capacity category you want. The Seagates are supposedly the quietest, although the competition certainly isn't noisy. Any real world performance differences between similar drives are mostly wishful thinking. After that, it's pretty much the luck of the draw- a small % of any manufacturer's drives will fail prematurely.
