If your boss told you to expect a 'substantial' raise, what minimum percentage do you think could be considered 'substantial?'

>10%

That might not cut it in larger cities though. 10% is pretty significant around these parts.

My "big raise" last year was 10%. It equated to about another $180 a paycheck. Not a bad deal. I'm pushing hard and hoping I can get 20% this year. I doubt it.

I'd say 10 - 20%, but it all depends on what you make really.

This year 5% could be considered substantial, many companies are still giving 0% or less.

id consider anything over 5% to be substantial, since most places work very hard at keeping standard raises under 4% using creative forms for the eval portion.

ever think to look up the fucking word in the dictionary?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/substantial?&qsrc=

It's a subjective word, dependant on the situation, facts, objects involved, etc.

What this means, is that your poll is meaningless. It could mean 80% to all of us, but 5% to your boss. You'll only be able to tell what it means by asking the person who interpreted it in your case.

Which is why I am asking all of you what it means to you. So, if your boss said to expect a substantial raise, and he really emphasized the word substantial, what is the biggest number that would make you go 'that is not substantial!' Then pick the next biggest whole number and find it on the list of possible responses.

I would try not to wonder about it, since it's hard to say. Substantial is a subjective word.

I would say it depends on who your boss/owner/ceo is. Some think giving you a 1% raise is substantial. While others think 15% raise is substantial.

When I worked at Farm and Fleet right after HS, I was one of the 5 people at the store to get a FULL+ raise. It was considered pretty substantial by everyone who worked there. Most people got the full raise or below. I went from $7.50/hour to 7.75... damn
