What qualifies as DVD copy protection hardware?

When I start up WinDVD I get a message pop up that says:

Copy protected DVD titles will not be displayed on your TV if copy protection hardware is not present.


First off...how does it know if my Radeon is outputting to a monitor or a TV ?
Secondly what qualifies as copy protection hardware? Does my Radeon have it built in? My Pioneer 10x DVD rom? Or do I need a dedicated DVD-Decoder board?

I don't really need it though...I don't even actually own a TV..I'm just curious what copy protection hardware is.

Edit: well technically I do own a TV, it just lives in a different city than me for the next 6 months. But I don't like it anyways.
As if a 24" TV has a leg to stand on vs a 19" flatscreen monitor for DVD playback 😉
 
ahh... copy protection hardware is the hardware (like a VCR, or a Reciever) that supports this protection scheme.

what it is is that the signal has an embedded code (or something like that), and anything WITH copy protection hardware see's that, and if it is told to record that signal, it will INTENTIONALLY DEGRADE IT.

as for it not working on non-copy protection hardware, that's BS from what I understand.. (it's to scare wannabe copiers from using hardware that doesn't support copy protection).
 
WTF would I want to copy it for? lol I have it on DVD..yes lets mangle the great quality DVD by putting it on VHS 😛

I'm not sure if I'll ever even use video out...but I guess it might be handy if I have company over one day when I actually own a TV 😉

I just don't understand if I'm outputting the signal of my desktop that just happens to have a DVD playing it...how will the TV know there is a DVD in it? It's just sending the colours of pixels...
 
None on the Radeon.

The copy protection is supposed to be implemented on hardware digital recording devices. That message is BS I think. Just like e-stores asking if you're using a Check Card. If you check yes then you get a message "sorry, we dont accept Check Cards".

BTW, DVD-RAM is now at 4.7 GB capacity. Yup, just the same as a DVD.

With a little help (you know who you are, thanks 🙂) I've managed to acquire a shall we say "workaround" 😉 if this hardware copy protection becomes an issue.

But it makes sense to me that it's BS, that woudln't surprise me at all.
I've actually used my DVD player and Win DVD 1.2.99 along with a Voodoo3 to watch DVDs on my TV..so there shouldn't be a big issue 🙂 I forgot about that until just now...

Virtually all gracphics cards with TV-out have copy protection circuitry built in.

The way it works is simple - when a program, e.g. DVD player runs, it tells the card to engage the protection circuit. If the card isn't fitted with such a circuit (almost all are, so it isn't a problem), then the program can refuse to run.

The circuit distorts the TV-out signal. The distortion occurs outside of the viewable region, so that you can't see it on a TV, but a VCR does see it and goes beserk. This is exactly the same principle by which pre-recorded video tapes are protected against copying.
 
Oh, so the Radeon's TV-out chip will have copy protection circuitry?

I don't want to copy, I just might want to watch on a TV at some point in the future....you say this will work OK?
 
Hmm I just remembered...at the end of April when I move back to victoria I'll have a roommate again and he'll probably want to watch DVDs to...

Do you think the radeon Vivo will work OK for DVD output? After all the V3 did...i don't see why it wouldn't...
 
it all depends on the way you wire your stereo (or connection to the TV from the video card).

I had my setup go 'berserk' because it wasn't set up the way one would normally do it.. I don't even remember how I had it though. it's been so long..
