random topic... I'm working 3rd shift and am terrible bored. Never thought I'd wish for a server to crash or something ;)

right now, what are you working on PC-wise?

I'm right about to start my new project.

I call it Lazarus. hehe. I'm taking a computer that I found in my garage from 1996/7 and seeing if I can bring it back to life as a Unix box. 100 MHz Intel cpu, 64-ish megs of ram. I haven't opened it up yet, but I'm expecting a lot of dust and some possible wildlife.

hopefully it will post :) it's been on my work bench for a few days, but I've been too afraid to open it. lol.

I just finished setting up a new IBM R40: I installed a new 7200 RPM HDD, some more RAM and an a/b/g card. I'm still tweaking it.

I also just finished switching my network over to gigabit and installed a new a/b/g router. Now I'm trying to figure out all the new security stuff. I'm also trying to find the source of sporadic interference on the b/g channels.

I'm playing with a new 2.5" HDD enclosure I got to take advantage of the 20GB HDD that I took out of my new R40.

I'm busy trying to figure out if I hate Battlefield Vietnam...

I think I bit off too much at one time.

Me too, while simultaneously planning for just how I'll get my Samsung 213t.

Non-PC:
Waiting for a paycheck so I can bring an ultra 10 back to life (hopefully).
Considering plugging in my sparcstation 10.

PC:
Looking at parts to build a new firewall system (the only nforce2/barton2500 firewall on Ananatech ;)).
Looking for mini-itx parts for a wireless/vpn/fileserver/mp3 player project (VIA c3 baby! ;)).
Considering building a test machine where nothing stays installed for very long, but I get to play with a bunch of things and probably bust an install or two.

Only you would have a barton firewall.

I need something that can handle: my connection, fully loaded snort installation, and ecc2 (a distributed client). A slower machine can do it, but these parts are cheap ;)

Making my PC silent.

So I've bought:
Maxtor +9 80Gb 7200rpm 8Mb cache (FDB)
2x 80mm papst coolers
TT Silent Boost CPU cooler
Seasonic Super Tornado 400W PSU

Old:
Quantum Fireball 40Gb
2x TT 80mm coolers
Generic AMD cooler
Macron 400W PSU

And then I'm going to RMA my Club3d GF FX 5900XT since it sometimes show disrupted textures, freezes in games and reboots.

hey Biostud, what do you think of the SilentBoost?

I just got one a few weeks ago, and wasn't as impressed with it as I was expecting. At the same time, though, I also took it off of my fan controller, so it's running at a higher RPM than my old fan, which could also be the issue.

Waiting for my SCSI RAID card to arrive. Then I'll be slowly adding drives to it. This will keep me occupied until socket 939 and the excuse to upgrade again. :)

DONE. Just upgraded my rig (last month) and savouring the finished project. :)
(despite AMD fan claims to the contrary, the P4 @3.4Ghz is a nice CPU) :p

Phew.

. . . for awhile, anyway (waiting for my notebook to comeback from RMA to sell the damn Dell . . . . and get something "nice" . . . that'll be a new - future - project)

Just found another SCSI drive (in a stack of papers), so if it works I can run a firewall with a 10k rpm drive :D

Non-PC: Just swapped a Shimano UN-53 for the POS one Trek put in my Bro's 7200 Hybrid, added a set of WTB Allterrainasaurus to replace the whimpy tires that came with it, and put a self-sealing back tube in. Now it's much sweeter for the single-track and jeep trails near us.

PC: Looking hard at a Barton Mobile 2600+ and NF7-S to replace my son's nF1/2200+ I might spring for the P4c 2.8 and a IC7 since it's main function beyond educational software that would run on a old PII is F@H.

Well it definately less noisy than the generic cooler. But's not dead quiet. But I have noise reduction isolationplates installed so that helps really much. Then only thing I might change is to move the front case cooler to the back, so that there isn't a hole where noise can escape. At the moment I think that the last noise escaping is due to the vibrations transferred to the cabinet, so I might wanna try some rubber screws or similar that prevents vibrations.

Trying to work out how to persuade my dad to let me make a HTPC and upgrade my PC and get broadband. $$$ :(
And set up a WLAN and projector - it all links together as one massive project really.

I ALMOST went to the darkside, but the A64 3200+ at $280 changed my mind. All I do is game, browse and listen to music, so the nForce2esque memory bandwidth doens't bother me. It's quite a bit smoother than my Barton/nForce2 was, especially in online gaming. Here's a screenshot of Sandra memory and CPUmark99:

A64 3200+ and nForce3-150, 217 bus, 2-3-2-7

Putting together a new SFF desktop to get me through 'til August. I'm thinking something along the lines of:

Shuttle SN41G2V2
Barton 2500+
2x512 MB Mushkin PC3500
Radeon 9800Pro
80GB WD HDD

I'm still shopping for a monitor...I may wind up going big and getting a nice 1600x1200 LCD.

I have a A64 gaming rig, too. I love to game and I wouldn't trade that comp for the world. :)

As for the P4, I was just looking to upgrade my Exchange server and things got out of hand. It went from a "find a nice, stable mobo and RAM" to "why not build a sweet backup rig in case something happens to the A64". I'm really looking forward to swapping out my 9800 Pro and seeing how a 2.6C@3.3ghz cruises through Deus Ex 2. :)
