Then it branches:
windows:
photoshop

dreamweaver
vim
flash
ultraedit -32 (yes, I realize that's a total of 3 different ways to code html not including notepad).

Nix:

gimp
XF86 + icewm
crackloads of pms
dillo
abiword

all I can think of off top of my head.

When I set up my computers, work computers, or friends/family computers this is what I generally will install:

Some version of Microsoft Office (if they don't have it I'll install free Office viewers),
Acrobat reader,
WinZip,
McAfee VirusScan (not the best, but when it is free who's complaining),
Whatever their current email program is (Netscape Messenger, Outlook, Eudora, etc) since I refuse to teach them a new one,
And every single Windows update and more importantly Office updates since I know they will never update the computer again.

Everything else I install depends dramatically on the person.

WinRAR

I have more... those are pretty much just the imperative ones.

OS Patches, Updates, ServicePacks, etc.
Sometimes RealPlayer (but I usually hold off onthat until I get stuck needing it).

Someone did a useful page a whileback from one of these type threads, here it is:

There are others that I use but the above are essential.

L i n k (Thanks to whomever put this together, it's helped me numerous times when I try to remember the name or website of that program I just can't find)
