I highly recommend the use of a media library that has these features. "

Instant playlist by Genre? Just do this: Right click on whichever Genre dir. you want and select play in media player or add to playlist.. Same this with alblums.. As for the search I can't say, never had to search for a song. :)
Some songs are a member of multiple genres, which allows me to tag them with "genre 1 / genre 2," for example "rap / hip-hop," but only search for one genre or the other and I still get the song, since it searches intelligently for any matching portion. You cannot do this with folders. My method is also arguably faster. And let's say you think of one particular song you want to hear right at that moment. Is it faster to browse through all your folders or to open ML and type like three letters of the song title? Also I don't have to put any effort into placing my music when I get it. Simply make sure it's tagged properly and throw it into the music folder.

Still not convinced? This method does not force you to do away with your folder structure, you can still keep it intact. So feel free to at least try a media library and play around with it, assuming your music is at least tagged properly.

yea, instant search features are just so much easier. type in the first few letters and u start to get results, hard to beat. only someone totally fixed in their ways would like to go through folders to hunt for a song. ick. and yea i use copernic to get to the folder structure i want to deal with. much faster then clicking and scrolling and all that nonsense through a buncha folders. just open explorer to the correct folder/file through copernic in the first place. once you go over a certain amount of files, digging through manually becomes a chore.

you can do a lot more in itunes smart playlists. they auto update based on rules you set, so it could be more than genre, but genre+ certain years + or - certain words in album or title, excluding certain artists etc

Or people who haven't organized all their music~

Also, I don't just listen to music, I can throw a video up at any time and they're all on the same 750GB HDD. So, I just keep the drive open, alt-tab while playing a game (dual LCDs, so alt-tab doesn't actually do anything to the game, just goes to the folder on the other screen :p), and nav by typing. Also since I'm usually in a "hrm, what do I wanna listen to?" mood and not a set choice, getting a quick glance at folders (List View) can be helpful in choosing what I'd like to play.
