What processor will be the one to get in the near future

I used to have the celeron 300a and it was a great chip. Since then I have had AMD processors. I ran a 600mhz at 1ghz for a while. I currently have an Athlon 1700+ cpu. What is going to be the one to get for price/performance in the near future. I have seen lots of speculation but no real answers in one article. Can someone explain or is there an online place that compares the thorobreds, intel chips, and the amd hammer? I know these have not come out yet but I am interested in what people thing is going to be "the thing".I really do not see the need to move up toe an intel cpu that can be overclocked to 2.4 because it would not be that much faster than mine. I am running my 1700+ near 1.6ghz. Maybe I am wrong. Unlike many other people I do not care if my cpu is intel or amd. I just want the best for me.

An overclocked 1.6A may not be much faster than what you have right now, but later on you could buy a new cpu as they come down in price (say a 2.2B) and still rock. Depending on what you want. You'll have to buy a new cpu and mobo if you want to upgrade from AMD in the future. I'm sure AMD is going to put out some killer stuff next year, but for the NEAR future, it's Intel.

Anandtech, Tom's and Sharky (to name a few) all do some comparisons, but the most valuable info for me was these forums. People tell you what they're buying and why. Most of the arguments I've read for AMD seem more fan-based than sense-based, and I just wanted the best performer for the money with options and upgradability. Like you, I don't care who makes it.

Hope that helps.................:)
