for me the year 2000 was a time of hope, fear, wonderment and much pontificating about the future. i am sure it was for many of you as well. every now and then i remember some of my surefire predictions, and realized they were way off. here are a few of them:

- segways would have far surpassed cars as a transportation method in cities all across america Just idiotic. did you even SEE what a segway was?

- the president of the united states would also be the ceo of a major company at the same time NOT for a long time.

- internet would be free for everyone NEVER. IF they can charge for it they will

- after 9/11, i thought we would have major bombings/crashings/etc every few months WTF? you are nuts.

- i would have about a million dollar by the age of 30, and live in a cabin on a large tract of wood and farmland hahahahah

those are just a few i can think of, i am sure more realizations of wrongfulness will come to me in time

some are kinda insane.

I never thought that I would get married and have a kid... but it happened. I found out that it wasn't really my sole decision 🙂

I also figured that I would be some sort of middle manager by now. I actually was for awhile, but it didn't turn out as planned.

I also thought that I was going to make 100K+ at my job. Again, I actually was for awhile, but that also didn't turn out well.

I always thought that I wanted to live out in the boonies by myself, until I actually did it for awhile. Yeah, it's not as fun as it sounded. I got sick of multi hour power outages every few weeks because trees were always knocking out the power lines.

Since George Bush isn't going to post here, I'll post his list:

- Not only would we still have a big surplus, the entire national debt was paid off by 2010

- The Iraq war, having been won in a few weeks, led to a peaceful pro-US democracy not only there, but led to democracy spreading across the middle east

- The Republicans would have a permanent hold on the White House and Congress, from the K Street project

- the financial sector would thrive under de-regulation

- The economy would thrive under de-regulation, loweing unemployment

- The US would land a man on Mars

This is an older prediction than that, but I thought that religious followers would decline.

It seems secularism was a growing force and religion would come to be seen as obsolete.

It has, for some - watc Bill Maher - but it has grown and thrived for many. Part of that is the alliance with the political right, and the increase of the profit motive.

I also suspected that separated, 'gated' type communities would grow even more.

Obsessed much?

I see and meet so many losers who don't have home Internet access and yet all are on Facebook daily. How? Because that bolded one is a reality, though you are still usually a loser if you don't have commercial home Internet.

Walk into any fast-food place around here and you see loser after loser spending the day there. I'm not talking about the occasional student or business guy that just needed access while on the road: I mean regular, every-day, almost all-day losers mooching power and access. It's a damned epidemic around here. Free wifi is all over but almost every location is overloaded with idiots "social networking" on their giant non-portable notebook or pitifully watching their shared Netflix accounts on their stolen MacBooks. A week ago I even saw a guy with his multi-function flatbed scanner/fax/printer/copier set up on the table at McDonald's.

didn't have a prediction or anything but i had a goal to be making 6 figures by the time i turned 30 when i started college. i hit that goal when i was 29 and 10 months old lol.

Some of us care about some larger issues. You can go back to sleep.

Ever hear that saying about 'those who don't learn from history'?

That means paying a bit of attention to history.

Learning from past disasters. So the next time we get those big promises, remember it.

So every possible thread on this forum needs to be about Bush? You might be a bit obsessed.

All day? and the manager(s) did not kick them out or say anything?

Around here, we don't have that problem. I think I can count on one hand the number of people using free wifi at McD, Wendy's, and other fast food joins.

Many are there for whatever free time they have in the day. They probably spend money, which is kinda the point to offering it. They aren't necessarily homeless or unemployed; they are just losers with no home Internet connection.

I don't get the logic. They spend money at the fast food places to get "free" wifi? I am paying $35/month for naked DSL only or $1.16 per day. I bet they pay for than $1.16 at the fast food place(s) per visit.

Anyway, I need broadband for work and play. I rather cut back on eating out or other expenses before cut my broadband connection.

My other prediction that was wrong was about fast (as in S. Korea) and cheap ($20 or less) broadband widely available by now.
