It's connected with wires. How else would it be connected?

(Yes, I realize my answer is probably wrong ... just being a smartass ... )

I don't know about the EADS one, but Abiomed one uses current induction to charge an internal battery. The internal battery of the EADS one gives 5 hours of usage before needing to be charged.

"When the batteries run low, they can be recharged from a portable external pack that passes energy through the patient's skin by a current induction method."

how the fuck do I know, I think it's odd for wires to be sticking out of someone connected to a battery pack. Crono's answer seems a bit more logical.

Not yet. That would be ideal, but the technology doesn't exist (or it's not mature) for an artificial heart to draw energy from the molecules (sugar, ATP) that the actual heart uses.
