This wouldn't be a problem except for reasons that I don't know because I am not a software developer it is difficult to write programs that can equitably use all cores

I would love more cores. When I'm playing an MMO like Aion my CPU pretty much idles until I go into a big battle with lots of other players. Then my CPU max's all cores and things start to slow down. A 12 or 16 core CPU would be fine with me.
