I've got a big ol Maine my excellent compatriot that hunts down anything unfortunate enough to find it's way into my house. And before destroying said spider, moth, cicada, mouse, etc., he 'chatters' at it. It's hilarious. Best damn cat I've ever seen - you gotta love it if a pet can earn their keep!

where the hell you live that you have quarter-sized spiders walking around?

sacramento, their total size is about as big as a quarter the actual size of there body could fit in a dime. its just annoying to have to kill them all the time, not to mention i hate bugs.

btw, anybody know where to get some good chinese food in sac town?

Count your blessings, they're the size of freakin' coasters in se NY. Luckily the house centipedes seem to be winning the war with them at my place, and they don't freak me out the way spiders do :Q

I know exactly what spiders you're talking about. Get a vacuum and start sucking, because that's the only way. I wonder if a roomba would make a good pet...

You could always Bug Bomb....

If you want something that will keep the spiders off you while you sleep a cat would be the best way to go, though you'd want to raise it from a kitten so it'd be affectionate enough to sleep on the bed.

In general I'd say any type of wall-climbing lizard. But getting a pet to clear out the spider problem is going to be difficult. I'd say just stick to the insecticides and Bug Bombs.

Vote: Pest Control Service. ~$20/mo or the 1/yr stuff. Should be gone after 2-3mo's.

anybody know of any household pet i could keep around to get rid of them? does anybody else use an animal/pet in this way?

Call an exterminator. Having a monthly contract is cheap and effective.

Having a pet merely for pest control is just wrong. Pets require and deserve love and attention.

I wonder what all these spiders are eating? You must have lots of other bugs around to support so many spiders. I'd leave them alone.

Seriously, nothing will do what you want. A cat or dog may kill the occasional spider, but just out of boredom. If you think about it, no one with an insect problem brings cats into their home to deal with it. You are going to have to bomb the place or something like that.

You've never met my dog -- we call her the "bug hunter", and she goes nuts when she sees something running or flying around the house. She also won't stop until it's dead, camping out in strategic locations to wait for the next "sighting". She now knows the word "bug", and I can send her into a tizzy by saying it and pointing (but, curiously, she'll jump on ME!).

When we were in Texas, it was sometimes quite comical because she would pick up crickets in her mouth and carry them around, spitting them out after a minute or two, unharmed! Not quite sure why she did that, but it was hilarious to watch.

Hehehehe..... :D

My cats own the crap out of any bugs or spiders they happen to find in the house. One time at my old place, a cricket got into the house. All 3 cats chased it around for several minutes before they finally caught it and proceeded to tear it apart. We found pieces of cricket spread all over the place once they were finished.

They won't stop hunting the bugs they find until they catch it or it disappears somewhere they can't see or reach it.

Personally though, if you're having this much of a problem with spiders, I'd call an exterminator or find out why on earth you've got so many spiders. You must have a serious bug problem if there's so many spiders around.

i second the gecko idea.
my roomate had a tokay gecko he let free roam in the house.
they only are active at night. you would never see it in the day and even at night. you hardly saw it.
but it lived on its own in a small apartment for 6 months. so it was obviously getting food (insects, spiders) somewhere.

i like the gecko and bird idea cuz they should be realitvely easy to maintain(more so then a cat). im kinda hesitant about some guy coming over every month to spray some raid on my house plus i dont wanna pay for it, im cheap. im gonna head over to petco today and see whats going on.

its not that bad its just that nobody was in this house for a couple months before i moved in so i think this intial bug problem isnt gonna be around for too long.

just get a zippo lighter, the spiders are attracted to its warmth and beautiful glow when lit, when the get too close, the little hairs on them ignite into a fireball for all to see, including the cat. it can be great family fun

text. At their biggest they're maybe 2-2.5 inches long. They're uber-fast too, by all means they should frighten me more than spiders, but millenia of evolution > logic, and so I don't really mind the centipedes. I also don't particularly like them, but if I see one I squash it and that's it. If I see a spider I'll have an elevated heartrate and sweaty palms for hours afterwards and feel as if stuff is crawling on me, and will constantly check to make sure nothing is  It's embarassingly irrational, but what can I say? Not feeling that way would be like changing my heartrate by thinking about it or something.. it's hardwired.

Hedgehogs are insectivores so they will indeed kill spiders and other such critters theoretically. I've never heard of hedgehogs (African pygmy kind) killing snakes and mice though, especially since they (the hogs) aren't all that big. The European hedgehogs (this is sounding like Monty Python) are bigger and probably do take on snakes and the like, but the little African ones are insect munchers.

However, it's not always wise to let hedgies eat wild insects because those insects can be feeding on nasty stuff (chemicals and such) that could then build-up in the little spiny one. It's not an issue in Africa, but it is in New York. :)

We had a little hedgehog for almost four years. Cute little girl.

The european hedgehogs are big enough to fight against any common snake in Romania (snakes that are at most like five feet long, usually much smaller). Also, the hedgehogs are extremely resistant to poison. Yes, some nasty chemicals would build up.
I like hedgehogs too, but here it isn't a pet :(

Hairspray + fire

No such thing as good chinese food in Sac but I guess you can try Elk Grove. There's a Tung Kee next to Florin Mall too, at least it somewhat tastes normal.

My cat once killed a snake and then dragged it into the living room, bleeding, to put on display for all of my family to admire. It's not uncommon to find lizard heads around the house with no trace of the body.

So you want a frog running loose around your house rather than a cat?

Also spiders are a seasonal thing at my house. I get a lot of spiders in the spring, while in late summer, fall and winter, I rarely see them.

I've known cats to go after any small moving creature in the house. A cat could be helpfull. Also I think lizards eat insects in general (i'm assuming spiders too...) I don't know if there are places to buy lizards though so this might be a moot point. I'm guessing you'll have to find some kind of pison that is suposed to leave a residue and continue killing/repelling bugs for months at a time and treat every little nook and cranny in your place with it. Also (if possible) treat the outside of the building with poison where ever they could get in from.

Otherwise an exterminator might be the only fix.

I would also vote bug bomb, set one off in every room of your house, and you are probably pretty much guaranteed to have killed all of the spiders.
As far as something like a gecko, don't get a tokay gecko, atleast not if you ever get the notion to mess with it. They are mean devils, they will bark and hiss at you, along with attempting to bite you anytime you try to mess with them. Maybe try a Day Gecko, as they are one of the few that are active during the day, that is atleast if you want to see much of it.
You might want to look into some green or brown anoles, as they are usually dirt cheap, and you could probably get a dozen of them for what one gecko would cost, unless prices have gone up on them here recently.
