the smashed spider on my monitor is the third one today, they are about the size of a quarter and iv been bitten by one already last night in my sleep. i moved into my new place 2 days ago and had to get a can of raid that night. i was wondering if theres anything like a lizard or something i could get to eat the spiders so i dont have to go hunting them down all the time.

anybody know of any household pet i could keep around to get rid of them? does anybody else use an animal/pet in this way?

As opposed to an unnatural pet? :p

Seriously, nothing will do what you want. A cat or dog may kill the occasional spider, but just out of boredom. If you think about it, no one with an insect problem brings cats into their home to deal with it. You are going to have to bomb the place or something like that.

Count your blessings, they're the size of freakin' coasters in se NY. Luckily the house centipedes seem to be winning the war with them at my place, and they don't freak me out the way spiders do :Q

You've never met my dog -- we call her the "bug hunter", and she goes nuts when she sees something running or flying around the house. She also won't stop until it's dead, camping out in strategic locations to wait for the next "sighting". She now knows the word "bug", and I can send her into a tizzy by saying it and pointing (but, curiously, she'll jump on ME!).

When we were in Texas, it was sometimes quite comical because she would pick up crickets in her mouth and carry them around, spitting them out after a minute or two, unharmed! Not quite sure why she did that, but it was hilarious to watch.

Hedgehogs are insectivores so they will indeed kill spiders and other such critters theoretically. I've never heard of hedgehogs (African pygmy kind) killing snakes and mice though, especially since they (the hogs) aren't all that big. The European hedgehogs (this is sounding like Monty Python) are bigger and probably do take on snakes and the like, but the little African ones are insect munchers.

However, it's not always wise to let hedgies eat wild insects because those insects can be feeding on nasty stuff (chemicals and such) that could then build-up in the little spiny one. It's not an issue in Africa, but it is in New York. :)

We had a little hedgehog for almost four years. Cute little girl.

A bird (with long beaks designed for "meat" eating)

use to have a big barnlike toolshed in the backyard and me being quite arachnapobic, never ventured into it. So every fall my dad would open the doors for a week or so and by the end of the session the webs and spiders would be all gone.

Zeh birds took zem!!
