First, read this really short, just lists a few video cards.

This leaves noobies to belive that a 5900XT outproforms a 9800XT and a 9600XT outproforms a 5950u. This is stupid!

I was using their resources to reasearch digital cameras... but after this i don't think that i will anymore! What do you guys think? do you guys use any of the advice PC World gives on buying?

EDIT: It seems they weighed price into which one come out as number one proformer... shouldn't they list which one acctully proformed the best at first and just put the "Best Buy" thing by the one that they think is best for the money? For a consumer this could be really confusing.

It could be based off of sales, or some kind of "bang for buck" criteria... even then it makes no sense why the 9800XT would be #2.

Guys, these print PC/Hardware magazines are on a 2 month lag. So if Creative released the Audigy 3 XLS Soundcard this week, it probably wouldn't be reviewed for at lest two months for a print publication.

The most glaring example of this is CPU magazine. I love the magazine, but I am constantly turned off by the reviews, that I had already read online 6-8 weeks prior.

Most of these magazines have editorial, and print deadline restrictions, so a lot of what they have to do by the deadline, is old news to us once we actually get the 'new' issue.

still, a 5900XT over a 9800XT and 5950u doesn't make any sence. What i am asking is if they are still credible for advising the buying of electronics. I am lucky i know about vid cards enough not to belive their review that a 9600XT will out proform a 5950 or 9800pro. And another thing, they say "dispite having half the ram of the asus 9800XT" Unblivable! they are feeding the public crap! I am scared to take their advise on digital cameras now because i saw this. who know what wrong they are saying about those, cause i don't know any different!

Hey there n00b, if the 'Guides' by PC World rattle you, then look @ other reviews of what your interested in. Don't pin all your expectations on one magazine/site. PC World isn't the be all and end all, and final authority on Vid Cards or digicams. I have a sub to PC World, but I the main reason I like it is for there multiple, quick articles.

It doesn't even make sense in the price/performance arena.

Price/performance.

1. 9800 Pro
2. 5900 XT
3. 9800 XT
4. 5950 Ultra
5. 9600 XT

9600 XT is last because it's performance isn't really that much, so it wouldn't be worth spending the money on.

Performance.

1. 9800 XT
2. 5950 Ultra
3. 9800 Pro
4. 5900 XT
5. 9600 XT

Just as the author of this thread spoke, WTF are these guys smoking.

If it was price/performance based, the 9800XT and 5950 wouldnt even make the list.

i'd say the most likely possablity is that the list is based on how much each company paid for the review.

Actually, I think this is quite a well done list. Flame me if you will.

First option (#1) is the best bang/buck performer (5900XT).
Second (#2) is top card for enthusiasts (it's cheaper than the 5950U and about = performance)
Third (#3) is the 9600XT AIW for your average Joe who wants some performance, but also features. This is here because it is not best price/perf, not is it an awesome performer, but is good for your average feature requesting performer without bags of cash.
Fourth (#4) is 9800Pro, goot performance, not best bang/buck, nor best performer, but a good card, 4th because it is beaten for performance by the 9800XT and for price by the 5900XT, and features by the 9600XT AIW.
Fifth (#5) is the 5950U, because it is fast, but also more expensive than the 9800XT (other enthusiasts card)

I think it's actually a fairly sensible ranking, given that not everyone is quite as bothered by a few fps here and there, and they are also going by high street prices, and it doesn't include the newer cards (X800/6800's)

Print magazines are practically useless in this day and age. If you want the latest info, use the Internet.
