What PC game(s) did you grow up on?

Looking at what's installed on my machine these days, I think back to the olden days of yore, the days where I was a kid with my first PC game title, and further down the line the game that clinched my status as a PC gamer. I'm not talking about the tiddlywinks CGA freeware games, I'm talking first off the Electronics Boutique shelf breed.

I think I lost my PC gaming virginity to Microprose's F-19 Stealth Fighter. On my dad's PC XT clone that I helped spec out. 640K of goodness, DOS 5.0 and an EGA video card. Ahh the days of the PC speaker bleating out screeching static (until I eventually got a SoundBlaster that I saved my pennies for).

Hell, I think Microprose themselves did me in as a PC gamer - F-19, Airborne Ranger, Silent Service II... those where the first three games I ever purchased.

But what did it for me... hmm... I'd have to say Wing Commander. As a teenager, playing Wing Commander was pure geekdom. VGA graphics, MIDI FM Synth music, and lasers going pew pew.

I was hopelessly addicted once I obtained my first copy of Ultima 7. It was like introducing a junkie to a cocktail of every single opiate known to mankind, delivered in a nice tasting sticky bun.

Today, I long for games like the ones I grew up on. That's why Bionic Commando Rearmed caused me to nearly soil myself. A fresh coat of paint on that old Radio Flyer... and yet it feels just like when I was 12 years old.

What's your story?

My introduction to the gaming world was Final Fantasy for Nintendo. It will always and forever be the most beloved series.

Soon after, my introduction to PC was Chuck Yeager's Air Combat, Ultima 7 The Black Gate, Commander Keen, Duke Nukem' and Command and Conquer.

Agreed, Bionic Commando Rearmed is incredible. Stalker also gave me that tingly feeling I use to feel. Crysis gave me the roam free feeling of Mario 64.

I have no idea where WoW came from. I tried it once at this chick's place. She was almost retarded as the game was. Someone needs to be held accountable for WoW.

Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt are the first ones I remember... oh, and Dragon Warrior. Then of course there was Blades of Steel and Super Tecmo Bowl. This was before I knew computer games existed.

As far as computers, the first game I remember was Jack Nicholas Golf... then there was Commander Keen. Eventually there was Sim City and Sim Ant. Then the next games I played were Half Life and Counter-Strike.

I think one of the very first games I played on the PC was the original Duke Nukem, when I was about 8 or 9. I remember playing that one game, someone made a thread about it a few days ago, where you were that kid with the red hat and you would go around the school at night. There was another, it was a point and click game, you were some guy who had yellow pants and a purple shirt, the graphics were a little bit cartoony and you had to solve puzzles and such (does anyone know what game this was?). Also there was one more I can think of, but I can't remember the name. It played a lot like Duke Nukem, sidescroll shooter, I think the guy's name was Max or Sam, anyone know what this game is too? Its really weird thinking about these games because I remember playing them so vividly... ah the good old days of floppy disk games.

I also remember watching my pops play the more mature games later on like Duke Nukem 3D, Hexen, Diablo, Wolfenstein 3D. Haha, I remember when he got to Diablo, he would have me press the potion buttons as his health got low so he could focus on manuevering and killing him.

EDIT: Secret Agent was the other sidescroll shooter that I was thinking of
Another game I remember playing was Blake Stone, which pretty much was wolfenstein in space
Lol, two more that I rememer are Terminal Velocity and Descent

Lemmings and Infotron (port of Supaplex) on the Mac, and later Descent 2 and C&C:Red Alert. I spent two or three years with each of these games, either playing or modding.

my first games were the original falcon/f-19 and since my family worked at papyrus design group I had a steering wheel and Indianapolis 500, and Iindycar/Nascar Racing games mostly when I first started.

CIV I, Windows 3.1 version as well as Mac OS version.

someone mentioned jack nicklaus golf, i also had this game and played tons of it on my B/W Mac Plus!

why do people always talk about consoles when people ask about PCs (especially in a PC gaming forum)????

anyway, I started out on a Tandy 1000 that my uncle had. My family would go to his place and spend New Year's Day with his family every year and I always looked forward to playing the games on his PC. I remember Lemmings and some 3d space tank game, Jill of the Jungle (i think it was Jill), and probably a few others. I remember the first time he had internet access too, through AOL, lol.

My next experience was on a friend's PC. I think the 1st game I played on that was the original C&C.

A few years later my parents bought our first PC and I was a big fan of the Sierra games, like Gabriel Knight, Police Quest, etc. The guy that built our PC had put on a shareware version of Doom and I remember playing that to death.

Seriously! I started reading some of the posts saying "Um... those aren't PC games!"

Mean 18 was the first, Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis was an early favorite, and Marathon 2: Durandal made me a fanatical gamer.

Oregon Trail and Montezuma's Revenge. We got to play those on the old Apple II and IIe we had at school. I didn't get my first personal computer until '96. I spent a whole lot of time when I was 15 or so playing Descent, Doom, and Duke3D. Then Crusader:No Remorse. Man, those were the days.

I think Firebreak, Tom Sawyer, Treasure Mountain (orig) were among the first ones I played...

"Grow up on"? None.
I grew up on food, water, and sometimes dirt when we had no food.

I guess you could say during my "growing up" years I learned how to game with GORRILLAS.BAS and NIBBLES.BAS.

By the time Wolfenstein3D came out I already had chest hair and was much more interested in girls.

But girls proved to be expensive and less reliable than windows ME so I went back to games. I still think of the years when Total Anhilation: Kingdoms, Deus Ex, and Baldurs Gate 2 came out as the best years in computer gaming.

Its all so much bullshit now. I pity any kids who try to learn about fun on a computer these days. They would be screwed.

Incidentally, I still have fond memories of Master of Orion 2, Hell, Doom 1 & 2, Duke 3D, Elvira 2: Jaws of Cerberus, Warcraft, Wing Commander 3 & 4, Ravenloft: Stone Prophet, Might & Magic 1-8, and a buttload of others I enjoyed but cant remember now. Good times, will probably never return.

GORILLAS.BAS owned...

hehe I remember playing that a lot, my dad helped me make some cheesy games outa basic

On the PC, some mother goose game that came on like 4 5.25" discs. Oregon Trail and some math game with a dog in space in elementary school. Kid Pix if you count that as a game. I grew up on console games, NES, genesis, and PS1.

C&C: Tiberian dawn and C&C Red alert 1. I remember playing them on the PC and on the PS1, PS1 was fun in multiplayer, a lot of effort to get itn working though and a lot of frustration if you and the other people you play with are all sore losers lol "im not speaking to you anymore fucking cheat!!" ahhh good times.

I liked building huge bases in single player, i did that in the ant missions too because i liked having a threat around, and the ants were a threat if i sold all my pillbox's around their nests, good fun. If only you could save skirmish games... would have saved me a lot of time looking for the perfect map to build a huge base with a tech level of 10. The storyline was also my first taste of a game with a good story, in hindsight picked a pretty good pc game to grow up on 🙂 Its probably why i hate EA so much now, they hit a nerve when they wrecked C&C.

Early on? Oregon Trail on the old Apple IIe along with some others. Wolf3D, Commander Keen, Doom (oh man the video lag I got at fullscreen). After that.. Cyberia was an awesome game, the sequel was decent, too. The Quest for Glory Series (SO GOOD), C&C et al, Baldur's Gate et al, etc.

My first real gaming love was Carmageddon. After that, I started playing a lot of Starcraft. I have some of my fondest gaming memories from Carmageddon and whenever I listen to Iron Maiden, it reminds me of running down "peds" and slamming other cars.

My very first has to be that black and white paper airplane game on a very very old Apple computer around the very early 90s (at around 8-9). Then I moved on to Wolf3D, also back in the early 90s.

My very first online experience with other players was Warcraft 2 on Heat.net back in 96. Moved on to SC/Brood Wars, then to War2 BNET, Diablo 2, Warcraft 3 RoC, War 3 FT, WoW, WoW: TBC, and now WotLK beta. Over 12 years of Blizzard gaming and still planning for SC2 and D3. I probably should work for the company 😛.
