What part of the power supply powers the video card

if your motherboard has an atx plug on it only then thats the part that powers it since it is the only thing plugged into the motherboard, what exactly are you asking?

It gets power either through the AGP slot (feeds through the mobo) or through it's own power feed... If you want more than that, you need to be more specific with your question.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was reading another forum and they were talking about what powers what in a power supply. I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that the +12V rail powers the video card? I don't know if this is right, because I was wondering if the power supply I am getting would be able to power my new system

My new system is...
ASUS "A8V Deluxe" VIA K8T800 Pro
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz, 512KB L2 Cache 939
Corsair XMS (512 x2)
CD-RW
DVD+RW
Three case fans

And the power supply I am getting is this...
Thermaltake Silent Purepower 480W - Xaser Edition
+3.3V@30A;+5V@40A;-5V@0.3A;+12V@18A;-12V@0.8A;+5VSB@2A

Will this power me system?

Look in my sig... I'm using the Antec 480W Neo Power PSU inside my system. It provides more than enough power for what I have. Even with a dedicated line to my video card.

You might want to get a combo drive instead of the cdrw. Especially if you plan to 'archive' your movies. Also, what video card are you going with?

Whoops, sorry I have the PNY 6800.

The reason I am getting the CD-RW is because I already own the DVD+RW.

Thanks for the advice though

You should be fine with any 450W or larger QUALITY PSU. As shown in my sig., I'm running 4 hard drives, three optical drives, a floppy, tv tuner, 6800GT, and more all on the 480W Antec Neo Power PSU. I gave the video card it's own feed (the card maker wanted it to have it's own feed) and still had enough connections for everything. I have one case fan (front) running off the PSU with the rear fan running off the mobo feed.

Best advice I can give is DON'T skimp when it comes to the power supply. I also say don't cut corners on the case, but it seems like that's where most people get cheap. Lets just say, at 2x the price of my old Antec case, my new Lian-Li is about 10x the quality.

Don't boards that support the 6800 chipset have a 6-pin SLI (aka Xeon) connector on them to provide additional power to the slot?

If so, I'd say make sure your power supply has the 6-pin connector on it. On that same note, I would consider a power supply with dual 12V rails so you offload the power going to the motherboard (for video, CPU, etc.) from the rest of the PC (drives, case fans, etc.)

No what you are thinking of is the PCI-E connector. It is SUPPOSED to replace the current 4 pin molex. It has a pin config like this: :::

AFAIK the only powersupplys that support it are the ones that support the BTX standard which are the OCZ Powerstream PSU's as well as certain coolermaster units. You dont have to get a PSU that supports it all the cards come with an adaptor (ie 4pin to 6pin)

As for the video card. The 6800LE is definately faster than the 6600GT as well as the X600XT and X700XT. The LE has 256mb of DDR-3 RAM and is essentially an underclocked, and "under pipelined (and vertex shadered)" 6800U. A softmod will give you a full fledged 6800U (with GDDR3 and 256mb of RAM). If a 9600Pro is holding you right now go for the 6600GT, it is a very nice card that is (most of the time) better than all cards of last gen. The X700XT is also a very nice card but is only being released for PCI-E not AGP otherwise i would say give it a good hard look. THe 6800LE might be overkill for what you are looking at as you are somewhat satisfied now. Hey if you have the extra bones though go for it 🙂

Any of the cards will be significantly better than your current card. You really cant go wrong this gen.

Thats not a very good PSU, I'd recomend somthing better.
