Well with the talk of the fall of Mir, I have been thinking, what other space stations have there been?

There was Skylab, 1973, which was only inhabited for four missions over seven months, and prematurely fell in 1979..

And then there was Mir, 1986-2001...

And now, the International Space Station. Have there been any other long-term space stations built?

You're leaving out several Salyut space stations. I forgot how many there were, but there were at least 7.

Skylab was a disaster from the start. Destroyed metiorite shield which tore off one solar panel. Another panel failed to deploy. Took 2 STS missions to get basic capabilities.

edit: Salyut, not Soyuz

Of course, there is the secret vatican station orbiting right now.

Look up and say "Hey, JP!"

Here's an interesting factoid:
MIR had 104 people onboard during it's lifetime...37 of those were American.

<< the ISS looks pretty cool, well the idea anyways. whats happened to it? >>

NASA has had a bunch of problems trying to get the ISS together. The Russians have been a major player in the delays because of their poor economy. If I remember correctly, they were suppose to build some rockets for it but were a couple years behind schedule.
I remember reading in either Time or Newsweek that if the US government wouldn't have invested all the money it did into the ISS they would have dropped it a couple years ago.

The_good_guy: Oops! I said Soyuz! I meant Salyut.

The first 5 salyut stations were the first generation of space stations. Salyut6 heralded the second generation. Mir was the first (and last) station of Russia's third generation space station.
