What OS to use in an old system?

Ok. I have the following system that i want to set up as a kid computer.

AMD K6 3 450Mhz 256K L2 Cache
128MB PC133Mhz SDRAM
Nvidia TNT2
6GB harddrive

Now im wondering which OS i should do. My choices are Windows ME and Windows XP. Now dont get me wrong, on a fast system, xp is clear choice, but the system as you can see is very resource limited, and in case you guys didnt know, with all the win updates, Win ME is a fine os, way better then 98SE. So with thse specs, what would be better to set up?

I was going to give you some friendly advice until I saw you saying what a fine OS ME is. I'm afraid you are beyond help. 😉

98SE.
i have ME; I hate it.
such a piece of crap...

i dont know what you are talking about. 98SE is more stable + uses less memory / resources than ME.

OK, I won't bitch at you for your love of ME. 😀

Stick another 128 MB of memory in that rig and it will run XP just fine AND it will be far more stable than ME. I have a PII 450 with 256 MB memory running XP Pro like a champ.

Cheers. 😛

I would've said win2k if you had a little more RAM (if you were my neighbor, I would've given it to you for free as I have a bunch of PC100's just collecting dust. Now, I'm working overseas). See if you can get more RAM at dirt cheap prices.

Ok first of all look, ME is not my favorite OS, all im saying is, with the windwos updates(all of them) it is as stable as 98se. So i guess i will use XP, then add more ram when i get the $$$. Linux is out of the question, as my little bro does not know how to use linux. Ill use XP, as all my other rigs are, that way, it will be easier to network it.

get at least another 128MB, its around $25-$25... then overclock the K63 to whatever it will do (usually about 550MHz) and install XP

Yuck, I'd say you should go *nix before you go Windows 98. (Of course I might be biased because I've seen enough win98 BSODs today to last me the rest of my life.)
