What OS to run for games? 98SE, 2K, or XP

Currently I run Win98SE on all my machines just because it has been the best performer as far as my games are concerned. But recently I have been thinking maybe I should move my machines up to something a bit newer. I hated Win ME with all its bulk stuff that I didn't want and with no added stability. I guess the big problem I have with my 98SE systems right now is that they crash sometimes...I leave them on all the time. In fact, I use one of them to route our internet traffic here in the house.

Originally I heard that 2K was no damn good for games and judging from another thread here about games crashing all the time, that still seems to be the case. How about XP? Is is stable with games? Is it worth it to have that MS spyware running on your machine? Any opinions?

Thanks

For games, stay with Win98SE or go for XP. You can't play games on W2K but I played few games on W2K, it is ok so you might want to heck with

http://www.ntcompatible.com/

To find out which games will work with all OS versions.

Good luck

Save your money and invest $50 for a hardware cable/dsl router instead.

www.practicalynetworked.com for all you ever wanted to know about home networking.

I've got the SMC barricade and love it. Plus it's a print server too and never crashes.

Now my Win 98SE computer does what it's meant to do: Plays games!

Windows 98SE is more compatible for games but Windows XP is faster and more stable.

I`ve both a 98 PC & WinXP PC,gaming wise XP is very stable for newer games,it really does depend on how old your games are,the only ones that I`ve problems in WinXP with are very old games like DOS based games.

If your games are fairly new like 98 and onwards they should run fine. It`s really simple, if you want the best gaming OS for any game even old ones go with 98SE,if you only play newer type games then XP will be fine.

Have a look at NT Compatible to get an idea of the games that run fine.

I would say that WinXP is more stable with games. But some older games were not conceived with WinXP in mind (obviously) so you may want to setup a dual boot for your older games.

Set up a dual boot with 98se and xp (or 2000). I have a 98/2000 dual system with games on 98 and apps on 2000, and it works well. This gives me the option to try games on 2000 and also on 98, and go with the method that has the best stability and performance.

I've been running 2k for a year now and have not had any problems with games.

I do have it set to dual boot so I can play some older ones that would only run in DOS.
