Im gonna be building an Athlon 1.2Ghz/Epox system with standard components (SB Live and GEForce 2 GTS, 30 gid WD HDD etc).

The machine is 100% strictly Gaming and web surfing, nothing else.

What operating system would you suggest? Im currently running Win 98 SE...Dont really see a reason to use ME..but what about Win 2000?

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind this system is strictly for gaming.

Thanks :)

Win98, unless you are positive 2K will work fine with everything you'll ever ever ever want to play. Then dual boot. :)

Seriously though, do both OS's and dual boot. Stick Win2K on FAT32 so Win98, if you ever have to use it, will be able to access all your files..

You can put them on the same partition too. A windows and winnt folder look good together. I like to keep gaming machines simple, this is a good way.

As long as you dont play EA Sports games, go Win2K. If you do stay with 98SE. (Or dual boot)

Win2000 has my vote too, it would only run decent if you have sufficient amount of RAM.

Total system :

Athlon Tbird 1.2Ghz
Epox 8K7A Mobo
256 MB Crucial DDR Ram
Leadtek Winfast GEforce 2 GTS 32 MB
SB Live Value
CD-RW Drive
CD Drive

Thats really about it. Nothing outta the ordinary. 256 Megs should be enough to run Win 2k right?

Really, there is no reason to use Windows 2000. That'd be spending a couple hundred dollars on less game and hardware compatibility, higher resource usage and not near enough benefit to justify it.

I would say W2K myself but I think it all depends on which games you would like to play. W2K has the compatibility tab that is a nice feature, yet it doesn't always work. It all depends on the games you want to play. From personal experience CS. Half Life, Starcraft all work beautifully. Any game that has the little Windows Compatible logo on it (like SC) will work because that means it was designed to work with any windows version (hopefully). Good luck.
